As a PhD student I was employed in a number of roles within Waseda University. I taught a third-year undergraduate seminar on empirical research methodology (in Japanese), and worked as a research assistant for a number of professors and research groups, for which I was primarily involved in developing software and database solutions to handle capture, storage and text mining of large data sets across a variety of languages (English, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese) and platforms.

I worked for a variety of companies in the interactive entertainment and technology markets, providing bespoke editorial and copywriting, as well as consultancy services related to videogames and related media sectors. My clients included The Times, Eurogamer Network Ltd., Omnicom Media Group, Gonzo Digital Holdings, Future Publishing, Climax Group and Uncooked Media. I also regularly spoke about videogames and the entertainment industry on BBC television and radio shows.

As business editor, I oversaw the creation and the first four and a half years of growth of the GamesIndustry.biz website - the world's most popular source of business news and information for the interactive entertainment industry. My role had full responsibility for the editorial direction of the site, as well as significant input into the commercial development and business strategy of Eurogamer's business publications division. I was also directly involved in the launch of associated ventures such as sister site MobileIndustry.biz and the London Game Career Fair, the UK's first dedicated recruitment event for the sector.

I performed a variety of writing and editorial roles on CTW, the longest-running trade newspaper for the videogames industry, including feature- and news-writing, editing pages and approving page proofs, and filling in for the Editor during any absences.
