Teams are greater than the sum of their parts. Today’s healthcare challenges demand bold leadership- not from one individual but from all leaders, aligned in a unified vision for the future. As a compassionate and effective leader, I drive unified team performance toward this shared vision for the healthcare system at large.Over 20 years ago when I finished residency, I started an independent primary care office focused, in part, on caring for underserved Spanish-speaking patients in Western North Carolina. My partner and I named it Vista Family Health- something one can say in either language. We hired bilingual staff and delivered a tech-forward, culturally humble solution in a private practice model. We learned many lessons about the needs of our community and feel proud of the service we provided. While we grew over the next several years, we faced the realities of healthcare economics and policy. Serving an underserved population in a private practice setting was financially challenging. These very real (and personal) lessons of how our healthcare system functions have been the driving force in my career. My work is fueled by the idea of pursuing a better financial model for healthcare delivery, along with a more unified vision for a better healthcare system . After building effective teams that provide and promote value-based care for many years, I continue to focus on putting all the pieces together- value-based economics, primary and specialist care as well as hospitals, home care, technology and all the other parts of our business—building that unified system that is greater than the sum of its parts. I am leading toward a product that both consumers and purchasers desire. I believe strongly we can shape systems to deliver Value but it will not be with the models of the last few decades. To thrive, and not just survive, our solution set must be more bespoke. That is the leadership challenge I have embraced.
