About Rob Galanakis

Great teams build great software. Years of experience reforming organizations has given me deep insight into how to create an effective product development process, and the robust and equitable culture needed to sustain it.It's not enough to deliver the right product. You also need to improve, every time, how the product is delivered. It's not enough to get the best out of individuals. You need a holistic and empathetic understanding to create a truly happy and high performing team. It's not enough to mean well. You need to deliver the systemic change that will solve underlying problems, which will keep people engaged and unlock profound contributions.I am proud of what I've built and contributed to, but feel most accomplished when a customer, or especially a colleague, tells me how I've had a positive influence on their life.I'm an evangelist of Agile (especially eXtreme Programming) and a firm believer in the power of TDD, Pair Programming, and relentless automation. I'm also steeped in Lean/Toyota thinking and try to manage, lead, and develop with Lean principles.Technical Expertise: Ruby, SQL, JavaScript, Python, C#/.NET, Go, concurrency, functional programming, REST.

  • Milkrun
    Cofounder/Cto
    Milkrun Jun 2018 - Jun 2019
    Seattle, Washington, Us
I joined MilkRun and rebuilt the MVP in three months into a scalable web app while working another job, then came on full-time as CTO/cofounder. Joining and building something so early, and having the opportunity to support an incredible community of entrepreneurs, was a profound learning opportunity and helped me figure out what I should be doing with my career.

  • Cozy
    Cto
    Cozy Aug 2014 - 2018
    Portland, Or, Us
As Engineering Manager, then VP Engineering, and finally CTO, I was responsible for most of Cozy's operational leadership across engineering, product, and culture. The changes to Cozy since I joined in 2014 were profound, and they involved a large team of outstanding individuals, so credit is due to everyone who took part. My proudest accomplishments include:- We replaced a legacy application in-place. Cozy shipped a web app shortly after I joined that was incomplete and unsupportable. We immediately started turning our "mobile" web app into a responsive and complete version of Cozy. This took only a year to finish.- I established product and engineering processes that were lightweight, but rigorous and constantly evolving. Engineers and designers deeply understood what problem they were solving and why before starting work. We focused on high-quality, minimalist solutions to those problems. We created shared standards in engineering that made sure skills constantly improved, the codebase got better, and quality was "baked in" through code review, pair programming, unit tests, and integration tests.- We created a more diverse team and inclusive, robust culture. People stayed because their concerns were heard and addressed, and they could contribute with their "whole selves" and not just to a small area circumscribed by a job title. This created an environment that new hires, junior and senior, thrived in. We had fulfilled and engaged employees, very little turnover, great success with entry-level hires, and ever increasing productivity due to a team constantly improving in skill and experience. This required a few big things (like overhauling our entire hiring pipeline), and a thousand small things (I personally cooked the company lunch every week!), but it was in sum the most rewarding experience of my career.
  • Tech-Artists.Org
    Founder/Administrator
    Tech-Artists.Org Jun 2008 - Jun 2017
I ran the community for technical artists, including moderation, developing open source scripts, and coordinating a script and knowledge sharing culture infrastructure across all 3d communities. Establishing a community website- especially the first of its kind for an industry/discipline- required a huge amount of energy, evangelism, and hustle. The community is still thriving, but the server was thankfully moved and I'm no longer involved in the technical art community.
  • The Foundry
    Software Engineer
    The Foundry Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
    London, Gb
Working remotely on contract for The Foundry Visionmongers, I created the integrations between FLIX and third-party applications such as Autodesk Maya. FLIX is a web-based, visual story development tool used in the visual effects and film industry for turning storyboards into a more complete pre-visualization.
  • Ccp
    Senior Engineer
    Ccp Mar 2014 - Jun 2014
    Reykjavik, Na, Is
I moved to CCP's Atlanta studio to work on the World of Darkness MMO, until the project was cancelled.
  • Ccp
    Eve Online Technical Director
    Ccp Jul 2011 - Mar 2014
    Reykjavik, Na, Is
As Technical Director on EVE Online, I had oversight over most client-side concerns (game engine, graphics and audio programming and tooling, performance). Project-wide, I was directly responsible for training and mentoring a 30-person engineering team, providing both technical and 'soft skills' advice to client, server, database, and web teams. I overhauled the EVE developer experience and code quality by introducing automated testing, coding standards, and code review, and iterating on a stale Agile process.
