Being intrigued by Life and its building blocks, I started my career in my home country, the Netherlands, as a molecular biologist (BSc) and was quickly drawn to Molecular Health Sciences. I then learned about the most powerfull medicine known to menkind, Physicial Activity, and decided to combine these two scholerly interests to study Molecular Exercise Science (MSc) at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. It was there where I was introduced to Chronobiology. It turned out to be difficult to study Chronobiology and ignore Sleep as the two are so intertwined, and thus my interest in Sleep Science grew. Furthermore, as powerfull as Physical Activity was to Health, so were Circadian and Sleep Health. And thus I started studying the relationship between Health (Cardiometabolic Health in particular) and Circadian Rhythms and Sleep. My professional career began in the first year of my PhD studies. I started as a Junior Research Scientist with sleep and circadian aspects of the development of wearable health tech at HealthQ Technologies. Later I was promoted to Senior Research Scientist where my focus broadened to other biometrics, including Heart Health, Physical Activity, and derivitives thereof. At the same time, I co-founded ‘Sleep Science’ within the University of Cape Town to answer to the demand for sleep lifestyle coaching. The services provided included both one-to-one and group-based sleep consulting, sleep health assessments, and seminars. A few years later, after I finished my PhD, I was relocated to the Netherlands to start as Senior Research Scientist and later Head of Science at LifeQ, the parent company of HealthQ Technologies. Shortly after, I wanted to make more impact by targeting real problems within the public healthcare system and co-founded Habit Talk. My partner and I focused on developing a platform to reduce the workload for GPs and practise assistants at GP practises and help individuals make small but sustainable lifestyle changes. I also worked as a Senior Research Scientist for Advanced Health Intelligence, utilizing smartphone sensors to obtain biometric health data for health risk profiling. Currently I am a consultant for the Agency for a Health World, Schuttelaar & Partners, where I connect all the dots from my past with strategic communication to help our clients excel in Life Sciences & Healthy Living.
