K-8 Library Media SpecialistMontgomery Elementary School Jul 2008 - PresentNorthern VermontThis position is a 40% FTE, so our library is staffed two days each week, with both fixed and flexible classes. Provides direct instruction for students, providing reading excitement, encouragement, and engagement with multiple literary elements. Primary classes are infused with the Red Clover Book Award, and middle elementary classes explore the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award list. Curriculum is based on the document I helped to create for my other school district, and I have initiated work on a similar document for this school district. Instruction is based on the AASL 21st Century Learner Standards, and the Common Core State Standards, along with skill practice with technology. Visitors to my classes will find our students engaged and having fun while adding tools to their toolbox for learning. This beautiful library had a very tired collection. I pursued automation for this school, and found a much more affordable online software to use, cataloging book by book after an extensive weeding of the collection. Updated holdings quickly each year through aggressive grant research and funding. Served as an approachable resource to all of my teachers, from providing book suggestions and ideas, to acquiring books outside our collection to support classroom instruction including many great discussions about literacy and technology. Community outreach includes two Scholastic Bookfairs, the annual One School One Book, which I help to select the title, and read the first chapter aloud to the community at our dinner event. Additionally I provide an extensive list of summer reading programs to help families support their readers during the summer. -
K-6 Library Media Specialist & Long Term SubstituteWaterville Elementary School Oct 2010 - PresentWaterville, VtApproached to fill an unexpected vacancy within the same district as Cambridge Elementary School, immediately following my successful LTS experience at CES. This position is a 25% FTE, and I work one full day and one partial day, which at times, turns into another full day. Developed relationships with students and faculty as I assessed the literacy needs and developed curriculum to create excitement about reading and provide information literacy skills. This wonderful learning community asked me to stay on as their permanent Library Media Specialist. I brought library classes back into the library, so students could learn library skills immersed in the space. My classes can be as quiet as a whisper or as loud as a roar, depending on the character and feel of each book we explore. Instruction is infused with rich vocabulary words, multiple literary elements, discussion, practice and FUN! Instruction follows a district-wide curriculum, which we developed as a team, and is infused with Red Clover and Dorothy Canfield Fisher books, and information literacy skills aligned with AASL and CCSS. Accomplishments:Set circulation routines with students, teachers and families. Revitalized the collection as I automated, assessed and found grants and inexpensive ways to add books that kids and teachers want, while increasing enthusiasm for reading. Outreach to community includes two very successful Scholastic Book Fairs, along with literacy integration during school-wide community events.
