Working for one of the world’s leading telecoms company, I was responsible for taking ownership of the SQL Server estate and ensuring its health. This involved supporting and maintaining the existing infrastructure.

Working for one of the UKs leading fashion retailers, I was responsible for taking ownership of the entire SQL Server estate and managing third party stakeholders. This involved setting out road maps and Architectural build standards from scratch, gaining sign-off from CTO and making sure that they were followed by the business and external parties as well 3rd party vendors. Another element of the role was supporting and maintaining the existing infrastructure, which consisted of roughly 150 SQL Server instances with a mixture of Analysis Services, Integration Services and Reporting Services.

Working for 1 of the world’s largest services companies, I was primarily responsible for providing technical expertise to take the Network Storage Reporting Service from proof of concept through formal design and into live service. This was a SQL Server based tool which required authoring and seeking approval to ensure it could be deployed in a configuration which meets the user and contractual requirements set down by the MoD. I was also responsible for supplying 4th line support for live issues which could not be resolved by any other support team.

Working for 2 of the world’s largest services companies, I was responsible for leading a team of 8 SQL Server Engineers looking after the provisioning pipelines for SQL Server in the largest and most complex infrastructure in Europe. This involved the management and sign-off for key architecture documents comprising of multiple technical disciplines which had to be authorised by CTO and then the MoD before any change could be implemented. The team also acted as 4th line support for live issues which were unresolvable and the centre for all SQL Server tuning. All of these duties had to be carried out in line with extremely strict controls following ITIL processes and procedures.

Working alongside one of Europe’s largest and most sophisticated trading floors, I was responsible for the support of SQL Server databases. This involved 24x7 on-call support on a rota basis, performance tuning, troubleshooting, monitoring and database optimisation assistance to the development areas of the business. All of these duties had to be carried out ensuring strict ITIL processes and procedures where following and where appropriate maintained and updated.

Working for this leading communications company, I was responsible for leading a team of 3 SQL Server DBAs and 2 Application support specialists looking after the SQL Server based applications in the NHSmail infrastructure. The team was responsible for troubleshooting data issues, out of hours on-call support, performance tuning and continuous improvement of our products and applications. My team was also used as a resource pool for providing SQL Server consultancy to other business units and projects.

Working for the continental Europe arm of this global bank, I was responsible for the support & administration of SQL Server databases, continuous service improvement and new implementation. This involved 24x7 on-call support on a rota basis, performance tuning, troubleshooting, monitoring and database optimisation assistance to the development areas of the business.

Working in the UK arm of this global bank involved in the initial implementation, I was responsible for providing the business with complete end to end support of the SQL Server estate consisting of a large number of SQL Server instances. This consisted of documenting all processes & procedures, providing support to development teams, setting up of a new DR site. All duties were carried out while adhering to strict ITIL guidelines.

Within Energis I was part of the Enterprise Solutions team which provided support for a number of technologies including EMC, NetBackup & Sun Solaris. This role meant that to resolve problems I had to work very closely with other teams in order to resolve issues.

Working for this Reading based engineering firm, as a member of the 3 strong IT department, this role was 50/50 split between the development of the in house MIS Access system which had both resource planning and financial management uses and providing support to the 200+ users and the Windows NT 4.0 server WAN infrastructure based in 9 offices around the UK.

In this initially short term contract engagement, I was responsible for scoping and delivering a custom contact management system for a global sales team in a start-up telecoms company.

Supporting this office, manufacturing and warehouse based company working as a member of a small 2 person IT department, I was responsible for supporting 40 office user computers and 2 warehouse computers in a predominantly Windows based environment with a few Mac based computers.
