About Robin Cunningham

Recently I created The Sphere Initiative with the objective of increasing Experiential Health by reducing what neurologists define as Experiential Pain (or “emotional pain”) worldwide through research and innovation. It is a form of neurological pain centered in the brain that is experienced by virtually everyone. It involves interactions of the body, brain, mind and environment. It is “real” pain and it often has significant effects, both directly and indirectly, on each of us as individuals. It is also very costly to society. I also incorporated Sphere First, L.L.C., which offers project management and incubator programs, and arranges financing for both for-profit and non-profit entrepreneurs that want to develop products and services to alleviate Experiential Pain worldwide. It also offers consulting and educational services concerning the nature of Experiential Pain and how it affects human behavior and society, as well as the early signs of Experiential Pain in individuals and the development of timely and effective interventions. The Sphere Initiative and Sphere First welcome the involvement of any individual or organization that would like to contribute to the reduction of Emotional Pain, each in its own way. See our website at SphereInitiative.org for more information. I have served as a senior corporate executive officer and have held the offices of vice president, executive vice president, president and chief operating officer, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, director, and managing director. I have been instrumental if the formation of seven new ventures and have been involved in investment banking, mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, venture capital, and turn-around management. My functional experience includes finance, marketing, sales, administration, and strategic planning. I retired from corporate life at 45 years of age and have since had 15 years experience with non-profits.

With Hakon Heimer, (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories & Schizophrenia Research Forum), I've co-founded the non-profit Cure Alliance for Mental Illness, which advocates for increased funding for basic research into the causes, treatment, and cures for mental illness. Cure Alliance's charter is to make it possible for scientists, researchers, providers, family members and the mentally ill to collaborate through social media and to participate in advocacy campaigns for mental illness research at lesser costs in terms money and personnel. It also gives individuals living quietly and successfully with mental illnesses an opportunity to participate in our advocacy programs.

  • The Starboard Group
    Managing Director
The Starboard Group Jan 1989 - Dec 1994
    Greater Columbus, Ohio Area
This partnership was my last significant business venture. With 12 investors, it was formed to acquire (via leverage buyout), develop, earn ownership of, and sell existing corporations. It also offered corporate turn-around management. The partnership was financed by Chase Bank Venture Capital.
  • Renaiisance Capital Corporation, L.L.C.
    Partner
    Renaiisance Capital Corporation, L.L.C. Jan 1988 - Jun 1994
    Columbus, Ohio Area
Renaissance Capital was involved in the purchase, operation, and eventual sale of several businesses, including a computer sales and service partnership, a software development partnership (which sold its product to IBM), a payroll service partnership (which was sold to ADP), and a bank software consulting partnership, The businesses were all bootstrapped.
  • The Park National Bank
    Executive Vice President
The Park National Bank Jan 1984 - Dec 1987
    Columbus, Ohio Area
The Park National Bank was a local bank with a 90% share of its immediate market. It was incredibly profitable, earning 3.0% on assets and an internal rate of return to equity of 16% plus year after year. Shares were very closely held and only sold privately. I purchased 25,000 shares of the bank's common stock. My principle responsibility was to manage their leasing subsidiary, Park Leasing Company. Given the banks' profitability, only tax oriented leases could earn a rate of return comparable to bank's. When the US tax credit was repealed, I fired myself and retired.
  • Bulk Logistics Corporation
    Vice President Of Strategic Planning
Bulk Logistics Corporation Jul 1983 - Dec 1983
    Greater Chicago Area
I helped a friend raise $1.5 MM of venture capital for the creation of this new enterprise. My friend was Chairman of the Board. The company's plan was to consolidate the carloads of many different customer's shipments into train loads for which the company had negotiated discounted prices. It soon became clear to me that there were irreconcilable differences among the company's founding management. I concluded after six months that the company was going to fail because of this. I unhappily resigned. The company was dissolved about 18 month later.
  • General American Transportation Corporation (Gatx)
    Vice President Of Administration
General American Transportation Corporation (Gatx) Jan 1980 - Jun 1983
    Chcago
GATC, GATX's flagship company and cash cow, was in need of a turn-around. I was a member of a five person turn-around team. GATC, which dominated its markets, had become the tank manufacturing & leasing industry's high cost producer. I wrote a strategic plan intended to maintain and enhance GATC's position as the industry's leader.. (The Boston Consulting Group later endorsed this plan.) I also developed a computerized model of the company's businesses for purposes of simulating future performance under a variety of circumstances. This model took into account the company's fleet of 60,000 railcars, two maintenance facilities, and 3,500 employees. The model generated remarkably accurate forecasts of the company's future performance.
  • Marine Transport Lines (Gatx)
    Vice President Of Srategic Planning
Marine Transport Lines (Gatx) Jul 1979 - Dec 1979
    Greater New York City Area
As a consequence of the earlier oil embargo, many ships equipped with turbine engines became uneconomic to operate. Many existing ships and ships under construction at that time were converted to diesel. Completed brand new oil tankers which cost $250 MM to build sold for $50 MM. Marine Transport Lines had a fleet of five UK based oil tankers that would, under the circumstances, generate a loss of $40 MM over the term of their charters. I structured a divestiture of this fleet which eliminated this loss altogether and generated a profit for this entire fleet.
  • Marine Transpot Lines (Gatx)
    Vice President Of Finance
Marine Transpot Lines (Gatx) Sep 1977 - Jun 1979
    Greater New York City Area
During my tenure, Marine Transport Lines was the largest US controlled foreign flag shipping company in the world with some 60 ships, mostly super tankers under long term time charters. Each ship was a separate profit center, with officers and crew from all over the world. Each ship was subject.to tax laws of multiple countries and jurisdictions. Costs and revenues were subject to price indices. I was responsible for arranging and maintaining the financial integrity of these investments.I also authored a proprietary text on the contractual economics of international shipping.
  • Dean Witter & Co.
    Vice President
    Dean Witter & Co. Dec 1975 - Aug 1977
    Greater New York City Area
I was a Vice President of Project Financing, which involved very large customized transactions characterized by the contractual reallocation of risk and returns among participants. I was involved in redefining the nature of, and markets for, project financing. I also introduced Dean Witter & Company's Investment Banking Division to the use of computer modeling for purposes of evaluating and optimizing financing alternates for its clients..
  • International Paper Credit Corporation [Ipcc]
Vice President Of Sales And Marketing
International Paper Credit Corporation [Ipcc] Jun 1974 - Nov 1975
    Greater New York City Area
International Paper Credit Corporation was involved in industrial equipment, single investor, tax oriented, and leveraged leasing. I served as Vice President of Sales and for an interim period as General Manager. Investments in logging equipment and sawmills were predominate. Much of this business was in southern states. The company was first sold to E. F. Hutton and then to Chrysler Corporation. It became Chrysler Credit Corporation.
  • Gatx Leasing Copmpany
    Regional Vice President
Gatx Leasing Copmpany Nov 1969 - May 1974
    Greater New York City Area
I was in charge of the company's sales and marketing functions in the eastern third of the US. When I took this position, the NYC office was the source of 10% of the company's annual new business. When I left, I was personally was writing 65% of annual new business and the NYC office (including me) was the source of 75% of the companies annual new business. I also diversified the company from leasing solely commercial aircraft, adding industrial and mining equipment. I also developed a system for evaluating capital investments in terms of their impact on the company's share price.
