I worked in the office for the nonprofit that operates the schooner Adventuress; my coworkers lived in Snohomish, Olympia and Redmond, so we used Skype for most meetings; communication was paramount. The job: Collaborate on marketing initiatives and the transition to a new online registration platform. Respond to email and telephone questions of all kinds. Register people for daysails and multi-day trips, gather and share paperwork with the ship. Maintain accurate files. Send welcome letters to new members. Assemble (and write most of) the monthly e-newsletter. Help prepare for the annual fundraising gala.

Chimacum, Washington

Taught high-school Humanities courses in the alternative Pi program: 9th-10th English, Portfolio Productions, Civics, 10th-11th English, World History & Geography, Health, Art and Journalism. We started a newspaper ("Slice of Pi"), made picture books to teach Civics and Geography to 4th-graders, cleaned up the Pi garden area, and produced a sock-puppet production of "The Hobbit." We also read "The Giver," "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," "Candide," and "Into The Wild." Courses were organized in a block schedule, meeting once or twice a week for two hours. I also maintained a caseload of 10 families, meeting with students and parents monthly to discuss students' progress.

Port Townsend, Washington

As a Reporter (2014-16), I covered City government, business, marine trades, and general community news. I was also Arts Editor, and wrote Arts features, worked with freelancers and edited other submitted copy, managed the Community Calendar, and did page layout in the Arts Section. I began at the Leader as a Copy Editor, and continued to assist in that role after becoming a Reporter. I also was present for the transition to an upgraded online content-management system in 2014.

Pocatello, Idaho

Taught 9th, 11th and 12th grade English at Highland High School. I also taught an Early College course in conjunction with Idaho State University's English Department, offering a section of English 110: Intro to Literature, to seniors at Highland.

I managed the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District's library of videos and other educational materials, located at Pocatello High School.

Camden, Maine

Cooked 3 meals and 2 snacks daily for up to 40 passengers and crew aboard the classic schooners Mercantile and Grace Bailey, in galleys equipped with wood-burning stoves and iceboxes. We did have electric light, though. I also operated the yawl boat and assisted on deck as needed. I oversaw one assistant cook and delegated tasks to passengers who wanted to help.

Pocatello, Idaho

Independently taught one and sometimes two lower-division English courses each semester. I mostly taught English 101: Intro to Composition, but also taught 98: Basic Writing and 102: Critical Reading and Writing and 110: Intro to Literature. Maintained office hours, held conferences, submitted grades on time, and developed my own philosophies of teaching and learning, reading and writing, like whether or not it's OK to include sentence fragments in job descriptions on LinkedIn.

Taught Spanish, academic and creative writing, poetry, history, Latin, and applied biology to students aged 3, 10, 15 and 17 while sailing with 2 families plus assorted long- and short-term guests aboard an 81-foot schooner from Port Townsend, Washington, to southern California, then Mexico, including the Sea of Cortez, then to the Marquesas, Tuamotus and Tahiti, and then to Hawaii. I also helped on deck, stood watches, and assisted with food preparation and cleanup. I also accompanied the families on outings ashore and contributed to the practice of swimming, snorkeling and other water-related activities.

Taught Literature and Writing during two semester-at-sea programs, working closely with the History instructor and the Science/Math instructor, as well as the educator-deckhands, mates, captains and cooks aboard the schooners Harvey Gamage (spring semester) and Westward (fall). We read "After the Dance" by Edwidge Danticant, "A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid, "The Story of the Shipwrecked Sailor" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare, "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway, and a large amount of poetry by Caribbean, English and American poets.

Pacific And Atlantic Coasts, Caribbean Sea And Panama Canal

Joined as Cook in Acapulco, Mexico, and fed crew of 9 sailing to Mobile, Alabama via Panama Canal. Rejoined the ship in Miami, Florida, as Deckhand for the summer sailing as far north as Halifax, Nova Scotia, as we participated in OpSail 2000, a gathering of Tall Ships from around the world, offering deck tours and public sails at a number of ports along the East Coast, including Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, Boston, Halifax and Portland, Maine. The job required seamanship as well as public-relations skills, as we hosted many thousands of visitors at "boat-show" events. We also hosted passengers between ports during the summer.
