How urban planning led me to sustainable investing…I started my career as an urban planning consultant helping communities envision their future and put the tools in place to achieve that vision. While the transition to the financial industry may seem unexpected, sustainable investing involves a similar approach to long-term goal-setting and decision-making, as well as collaboration with key stakeholders. How might short-term decisions impact our ability to meet long-term goals? Who might be impacted by the decisions we’re making? How might we bring key stakeholders along so they support our long-term vision and understand the trade-off decisions we might need to make along the way?Instead of large community workshops focused on how a community might grow for years to come, I now lead collaborative one-on-one engagements with our portfolio companies so that, as investors, we better understand how boards and management teams think about their ecosystem of stakeholders and the trade-off decisions necessary to ensure the sustainability of their business. It’s been an interesting journey over the years and I’m excited to see where it leads. The bonus – my kids have walked with me on this journey and are developing their own passion for all things sustainable.
