The City of Campbell River Recreation & Culture department touches so many people. From recreation facilities; Sportsplex, Community Centre, Centennial Oudoor Pool, and overseeing all the bookings for outdoor fields. The department is also responsible for programming the downtown core and putting on events. They do this in conjunction with many partners such as the BIA, Tidemark Theatre, Library, Art Centre, and local businesses. Events include CR Live Streets, Spirit Square Concert Series and Farmers Market, yoga in the park Canada Day Celebrations and the Christmas Big Truck Event.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

10 sheets of curling ice, arena, squash & racquetball courts, lounge, community hall and commercial kitchen and concession. Introduced Pickleball in the community hall and Kid Zone in the summer on the curling pad. Placed 5 giant inflatables on the dry pad for kids aged 3-10, which attracted 1000 kids the first year.

Meadow Lake Saskatchewan

City Council wanted to get more of the community active and involved and increase utilization of the facilities year round. We introduced programming that attracted families, kids and seniors. We programmed space that otherwise would have been unused during the day time and summer time and in facilities that previously were intended for another purpose. At the aquatic centre we created a culture of caring staff wanting to provide a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. We introduced programming that included classes, swim lessons, birthday parties. In a short period of time, through word of mouth and improved service, the facility had returned to a ‘go to’ place for family fun. The City of Meadow Lake, Parks & Recreation department looks after an array of recreation facilities; aquatic centre, arena, civic centre (for weddings and other private functions), Lions Park - with 5 ball diamonds, 8 lane - 400 meter rubberized track and other track and field amenities, a 4 km paved walking path, tennis courts, play grounds, football field with with bleachers, a 30 site campground, outdoor amphitheatre for concerts and weddings.

Cochrane Alberta

In 2010 there were two revenue streams; user groups and tenants and virtually no programming. The facility was busy in the evenings from 5-9 pm and on weekends 7 months of the year, but otherwise stood empty and under utilized the other 5 months of the year and all the time during the day time. We set out to change that. We introduced programming in the day time to attract seniors, families with kids, people wanting group classes. In doing so we created a strong third revenue stream; programs and membership. Within 4 years, this became the number one revenue stream. We had managed to take an under utilized facility and create a strong community hub that was being used 12 months of the year and throughout the entire day. It all stemmed from putting together a caring staff that believed in the vision of an all inclusive facility that was the GO TO place in the community for recreation. In the summer of 2017, we completed a $48M expansion, comprised of an aquatic centre, curling centre and new Fitness Centre. SLS FSC totals 325,000 square feet. The facility has 3 arenas, an indoor turf, double gymnasium, indoor 3 lane track, several dedicated studios and multi purpose spaces for group classes; yoga, zumba, bootcamp, spin, heavy bag, and martial arts. With the expansion we added an aquatic centre; 25 meter 8-lane competition pool, leisure pool with a lazy river, water dumping toys, wave chamber, bubble pit along with a hot tub, warm water therapy pool, two large slides and an outdoor spray park. The new curling facility has 6 sheets of ice plus 3 junior sheets. The new fitness centre is 7,000 square feet. In March we added a climbing centre comprising of 8 climbing routes using auto belay systems. Several 3rd party tenants call SLS FSC home; Seniors on the Bow, Inspiring Minds Junior Kindergarten, Cochrane Sport Physio, P3 Sports, University of Calgary Gymnastics Centre, Kumon Learning Centre, Patsy's Concession, Jugo Juice and space for a pub / restaurant.

Responsible for a staff of 270. Led the company to 5 consecutive years of positive net operating surpluses and built the operating reserves to $3M, thus enabling the Lindsay Park Sports Society to handle any operating shortfalls in 2010 and 2011 while the roof renovations were going on. Provided an environment that enabled the Talisman Centre to attract and retain top staffing talent, who in turn provided an exceptional "customer experience" for the members and program users. In addition to this, we also provided the ultimate in training and competition facilities for the hundreds of atletes and clubs that called Talisman Centre home. We hosted over 45 sporting events a year; international, national, provincial and local. The staff were proud to show case their venue for each competition. My job: provide direction and leadership, look after the staff, they look after the customer and as a result the Talisman Centre bottom line looked after itself

Grew membership base to become the largest in Calgary. Provided leadership to Directors and built a strong staff team. The South Fish Creek Complex, in which the YMCA was a part, had several stakeholders. We had to collaborate and work together as a team. This included: SFCRA, the High School, the Library and the YMCA. We had a very successful operating model.

Implemented a successful marketing and sales program which resulted in membersip growth by 55% to 1700. Marketed to the Corporate sector in downtown Calgary which proved to be very successful in attracting members. Changed the name to Fitness on 5th. Attracted a group of dedicated staff that that wanted to improve the customer experience and through word of mouth have members refer their co-workers to join.

Provided leadership to the administrative and technical support staff. 3 dentists, 4 hygenists, and approximately 30 support staff. Managed the day to day business. Implemented a successful marketing program and implemented a payment system to reduce the A/R to a managable and collectable amount amount.

Spent 4 years as the Assistant General Manager. I was involved in the start up of the facility in 1990. I became the General Manager in 1994. We grew the membership to capacity and provided a customer experience that rivaled most private clubs in the downtown core.
