Formerly a journalist with Reuters and the Times of London (Moscow Bureau Chief), I moved into the think tank world in 2003 and I have straddled journalism, analysis, advisory work, think tanking and thought leadership ever since. I have held senior fellowships with several major DC-based think tanks: the Wilson Center; CSIS; the German Marshall Fund of the United States; and between 2007 and 2009 I ran the Europe Programme at Chatham House in London.Among other contributions, I chaired NATO’s key North America discussion group for outreach to leaders of think tanks, NGOs, academia, and other experts for NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept, adopted at the Madrid Summit.I’m always open to suggestions as to how to develop my career and skills, including, perhaps especially, in unexpected directions.My main areas are Russia/Ukraine/Central eastern Europe -- I speak Russian, Slovak, Czech, Ukrainian, as well as French -- the European Union; transatlantic relations; China; global democracy; democracy in the digital revolution; cyber security; macro economics; geo-politics; and the whole panoply of issues related to international security.
