Robin Smith is "Canada's leading documentary expert" (Barry Hertz, Globe And Mail, Apr.7/22) and is the CEO of Blue Ice Docs Inc and the Director Of Film Programming for the Whistler Film Festival. Robin brings a strong background of over 25 years of film, video and arts-related work to the marketplace having worked at a variety of distribution companies including The National Film Board of Canada, Alliance Films, Lions Gate Film Entertainment, Seville Pictures, Capri Releasing, levelFILM and has managed and navigated the release of such hits as CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, AWAY FROM HER, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, BLACKFISH and the breakout documentary KEDI. Robin has also acted as Executive Producer on over a dozen award-winning documentaries including the Oscar-nominated ABACUS: SMALL ENOUGH TO JAIL (dir: Steve James), the Emmy-Award winning SOLITARY (dir: Kristi Jacobson), the Emmy-Award winning ADVOCATE (dir: Rachel Leah Jones, Philippe Bellaiche), A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX (dir: Rodney Asher) and the soon-to-be release documentary feature THE ALEXANDER COMPLEX (dir: David Rane, Neasha Ni Chianain). Robin also produced the Canadian box office hit DROP THE NEEDLE (dir: Rob Freeman) that is currently playing on AmazonPrime in Canada.In 2020, Robin sold his highly successful distribution company KinoSmith to levelFILM. KinoSmith was a distribution, production and marketing consultation company that released over 200 feature films in the Canadian marketplace with notable success with the release of the Canadian documentary UP THE YANGTZE which has became the 3rd highest grossing documentary in Canadian history. Previous to starting KinoSmith, Robin worked at Capri Releasing Inc. as their Vice-President of Distribution triggering and releasing such films as AWAY FROM HER, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, TARNATION and DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE. Prior to joining Capri, Robin held distribution positions at Seville Pictures, Lions Gate Film Entertainment, Blackwatch Releasing and Alliance Atlantis Motion Picture Division as Vice President of Marketing and Distribution. Prior to joining the distribution market, Robin also held a variety of positions for the Toronto International Film Festival and the National Film Board of Canada. Robin also is acted as the Cinema Programmer for the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto for over 10 years. He is also taught Film Courses at Ryerson University including courses on Film Marketing and Film Distribution.
