After taking Introduction to Child Welfare Law while in law school, I knew I wanted to work in family law due to the intricate dynamic of preserving the rights of parents, children and non-traditional families while also operating within the bounds of the law. I began my private practice in 2002, focusing on all aspects of family law from representing spouses in child custody, child support and equitable distribution hearings to forming new family through termination of parental rights and adoption. I've represented children and young adults in juvenile delinquency court as well as in adult court before North Carolina got with the program and raised the age of adulthood for criminal law purposes from 16 to 18. I've represented kids, parents and relatives in actions involving child protective services. I assist families and individuals who are struggling with keeping cognitively limited, mentally ill and/or addicted loved ones safe which could include a voluntary or involuntary commitment to get the right resources in place. Sometimes my assistance requires the implementation of a guardianship, and other times a power of attorney will suffice. Often clients come to me after the fact. I navigate those clients through the appeals process. I have practiced in the North Carolina district court and superior courts as well the North Carolina appellate courts by writing numerous legal briefs in the Court of Appeals, and I have appeared for oral argument in the North Carolina Supreme Court. My experience in appeals includes criminal law, family law, termination of parental rights and child welfare law. I have been chosen by the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts, the North Carolina Juvenile Defender and the North Carolina Parent Defender to teach continuing legal education courses to judges, attorneys, paralegals and clerks. I have also taught for private organizations such as Half Moon Seminars and NBI, Inc.
