A motivated and enthusiastic ornithologist with a career that has spanned over 30 years in ornithological research and monitoring in universities, NGOs, UK Government agencies and consultancies, chiefly studying waterbirds. Area of expertise includes the surveying and monitoring of waterbird distribution and numbers at a range of temporal and spatial scales (within site to a national level), and assessing the ornithological impact of developments e.g. windfarms, on coastal wetlands and offshore.Experience originates from a broad range of projects in the UK and abroad, as a leader and team player, and includes: disturbance studies, species and site reviews, monitoring programmes, environmental impact assessments, and Avian Influenza surveillance training workshops. Intertidal surveys of bird and invertebrates formed the basis of much work during the twelve years field and technical support and guidance was provided to ecologists at Durham University working on bird related projects.Technical expertise in bird ringing and radio telemetry has been recognised internationally and has led to the participation and tutoring on over 22 expeditions worldwide. Most recently this has been as a part of Avian Influenza surveillance programmes both within the UK (Defra) and internationally (Turkey & Tunisia). The above expertise has been underpinned by many voluntary activities: International Wader Study Group, participation in county/national bird monitoring programmes and bird ringing.
