  • Learning Tree International
    Product Development Lab Projects Manager
Learning Tree International Feb 2003 - Present
    London, United Kingdom
Designing, developing and implementing several in house software tools that aid in the efficient rollout of Learning Tree courses. I provide the top level technical support within the Product Development department for all aspects of the courses. Recently Learning Tree has returned to the remote learning arena and I have been involved in the development, implementation and troubleshooting of the AnyWare system which has now been deployed in the US and the UK. Two other projects that I am currently involved in are the ongoing development of our IP Switcher utility which will configure a host PC and any number of virtual machines with only 4 or 5 keystrokes as input. This get used on every course that Learning Tree deploys. Secondly I also manage, design and develop the software deployment systems used globally by our technicians to rebuild all the training workstations and servers each week used in the classroom environment. Facilitating this involves creating many unique tools and methodologies that allow unskilled staff to perform this function thus saving tens of thousands in consultant fees each week. Following on from this I am responsible for the training of all PD Lab and Operations staff in the use of these tools. Some of this is done remotely to save on travel costs using previous e-Learning skills. Towards the end of 2006 I was asked to be part of the team that developed the first Learning Tree Virtualization course. I provided the technical expertise in conjunction with the author and technical editor. Skills gained: Management of multiple, concurrent development projects, seeing they are delivered in a timely cost effective manor. Experience in managing, training and developing with remote staff. Managing software development projects implemented in VMware, Linux and Microsoft scenarios. Technical writing and editing.
  • Learning Tree International
    E-Learning Systems Development Manager
Learning Tree International Jun 2000 - Feb 2003
    London, United Kingdom
I was tasked with designing and developing an e-Learning system that would facilitate a remote Hands-On learning system for Learning Trees clients. This involved bringing in an external team of consultant developers as well as my own skills to realize a system I designed. The system utilized a pod of 50 servers which could handle up to 100 client sessions simultaneously. This project involved managing a remote team of developers from my UK office and then relocating once a month to Washington DC where the system was hosted. I acted as the lead developer who coordinated with the other developers in what they were doing. As the project progressed, I also assisted in managing the commerce server front end and developed an in house beaconing system for mass student emailing so that we could monitor how many prospective students viewed our campaigns. The system was judged a success and has been patented in both the US and the EU. Skills gained: To develop this system I had to gain skills in Linux (RedHat & Mandrake), all versions of Windows, Apache Web Server, IIS & Commerce Server. I also became skilled in the use of VMware and the remote management of Virtual Systems from overseas. This required becoming proficient in C and Java so that we could re-engineer VNC remote access clients for our

    Product Development Lab Manager
Learning Tree International Aug 1997 - Jun 2000
    Los Angeles, Usa
I managed a team of developers based in Los Angeles, Washington DC and London who provided the technical expertise to implement all of Learning Trees public course catalogue. This included developing and specifying all the hardware platforms that we used to execute courses on throughout all Education Centers world wide. I also developed the software ‘baseloads’ that are used on the courses so that they can be restored and configured from scratch within a minimal time frame. Further to this I managed the development and training of all Lab Staff within Product Development and assisted in the training of Operations technical staff. I also provided the highest level of technical support within the company for all course related issues. Latterly, I became involved in the development of a 'Distance Learning' website so that Learning Tree could be in a position to offer 'Hands-On' courses over the Internet. This was a major challenge for the company and myself and resulted in expanding into a whole new department. Skills gained: This has given me extensive experience in Microsoft Windows (2K, NT, 9X), Redhat Linux and Solaris Operating Systems as well as all the associated applications that accompany these products. I also became proficient in the management side and had to recruit, train and performance evaluate all lab staff which was a challenge due to the remote locations.
