From 1996 through the termination of the Newton program reported to the Vice President of the Newton Systems Group (and later, COO of Newton, Inc.) as “Manager without Portfolio.” Responsible for the management and growth of the Connection Engineering Team, and the development of cross-platform Newton software. Managed a team of 12 software engineers and oversaw program management, product marketing, and QA through the release of Newton Connection Utilities for Mac and Windows; eMate Classroom Connect software; Newton Backup Utilities for Windows (German); and multiple revisions to the Newton Desktop Integration Libraries. Subsequently transferred to assignment in NewtonOS Product Marketing and responsible for development of Marketing Requirements Document for next-gen NewtonOS, exploring areas of modularity and scalability, as well as evaluating customer segments, sales channels and competitive offerings. Also worked with JAVA investigation team and communications architecture team to define requirements for future handheld and embedded products. Served as General Counsel of Newton Inc. spin-off during its brief existence.

First in-house Patent Counsel responsible for the formation, development, management, and growth of Sony’s U.S. IP Law Department. Practice included responsibility for the review and analysis of infringement claims, and the preparation of infringement and validity opinions, as well as the hiring and management of outside counsel. Also responsible for drafting and negotiating license agreements, and counseling all levels of both Sony management, and legal colleagues, on patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret law and related business issues. Developed and negotiated a broad range of technology licenses and agreements. Responsible for the growth, management, and development of Sony's U.S.-based patent portfolio, including the establishment of an invention disclosure and award program, and associated policies and tools, resulting in a five year increase in U.S. origin patent filings of more than 1000%. Managed team of attorneys, clerks, and paralegals.

Division counsel providing support for both MicroVAX II and PDP-11 product lines, including drafting and negotiating development agreements, IP licenses, and beta-test agreements. Also provided counsel and coordination of support for non-IP legal issues, including HR, tax, export control and anti-trust laws. Provided legal review of product literature, advertising copy, and promotional materials, and managed the development of the MicroVAX II IP portfolio, including supervising the work of outside counsel.

Drafted and prosecuted over 80 U.S. patent applications for K.K. Hatori, Seiko, Epson, and numerous individual clients based on U.S. disclosures and Japanese priority applications, and assisted in the preparation of patent infringement and validity opinions. Also prosecuted trademark, copyright, and mask work applications, and drafted legal memoranda in support of litigation.
