Stories define our community, and they can fuel profound change.I am honored to share stories at Sunshine Communities and of amazing men, women, children - even babies! - whose disabilities are little more than footnotes in their life stories. They embody all the best in the human spirit - patience, acceptance, kindness. I am humbled and inspired to work for them. I share their stories because they will show us, if we only listen deeply, how to create enduring community.

My work at the Free Press led me on a sometimes exhilarating, often sobering and always meaningful journey with those who honor our work as journalists with their willingness to share their stories. Some are facing deadly diseases or trying to grow up without family. Some have been horrified by crime; others have found love that endures to the last, empty stages of Alzheimer's. Their stories remind me daily of our desperate need - even in the break-neck pace of a digital world - to connect with each other on a most human level.

For 15 years, I covered core beats at The Blade - city hall, politics and crime among them. These were often the stories that were reported and turned in just hours - sometimes less. The most important stories to me were the most difficult to tell - those that touched on the impossible complexities of domestic violence, juvenile crime, and social justice.
