I led a team of consultants working with state departments of education and school districts to develop and deliver customized education services to raise quality and reduce variability in school systems, schools, and classrooms to increase achievement for students. Our work included providing school and district improvement guidance and professional development through short cycle continuous improvement processes, providing leadership and instructional coaching to improve school and student outcomes by focusing on research-based instructional strategies, assisting school districts with strategic planning, implementation and monitoring, and providing technical assistance to state education agencies through the North Central Regional Comprehensive Center.

I led SEDL's technical assistance and professional development work with state education agencies, school districts, and schools. For the Southeast and Texas Comprehensive Centers, I served as a senior advisor, assisting our comprehensive center directors as they led our staff teams in providing technical assistance to the state education agencies in our region in meeting the goals of ESEA. This work included assisting state education agencies with school improvement, curriculum and instruction, school and district leadership, college and career readiness, early learning, and data use. Through our Center for High-Performing Schools, I led a team of experienced and knowledgeable staff in providing professional development to school districts and schools to help them build the knowledge and skills of school leaders and teachers to improve instructional quality and increase student achievement.

Oversaw, conceptualized, and coordinated technical assistance provided to state departments of education in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina through SEDL’s Southeast Comprehensive Center (SECC). Worked with SEDL staff, SECC consultants and department of education staff in all five states to determine needs and priorities of states and to align staff and consultant resources to meet these needs and priorities. Prepared reports and annual plans for the U.S. Department of Education (USED) and represented SEDL in meetings with USED, other technical assistance providers, and state departments of education. Provided management oversight for SEDL’s Metairie, LA office and satellite offices in all other southeast states. Provided management oversight to other SEDL contracts in the Southeast Region. Built and maintained relationships with SEAs, LEAs, and other potential clients in the Southeast.

Oversaw all Recovery School District operations including planning and operational decisions for 112 school sites in Orleans Parish. Developed charter school application and approval process to ensure high quality charters in the district. Worked with charter school operators and district-operated school staff to ensure the development and implementation of high quality schools in Orleans Parish. Collaborated with the community, neighborhood groups, Orleans Parish School Board members and staff on planning and collaboration issues to support the rebuilding of Orleans Parish through education following Hurricane Katrina. Established first central office in New Orleans for Recovery School District and hired staff to administer programs and services needed to operate 17 district schools and oversee 17 charter schools in first full year of RSD operation following Hurricane Katrina. Worked with groups including New Schools for New Orleans, New Leaders for New Schools, and the New Teacher Project to develop relationships and bring resources to New Orleans to support both charter schools and district-operated schools in recruiting and hiring effective teachers and leaders. Oversaw the repair/renovation of existing facilities or building of modular facilities to ensure that an additional 21 school sites would be ready for the 2007‒08 school year. Prepared reports and plans for State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and Louisiana Legislature. Provided testimony on behalf of the State Superintendent of Education at meetings of the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, committees of the Louisiana Legislature, and the Subcommittee on Education and Early Childhood Development of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Served as a spokesperson locally and nationally for the State Superintendent and the Louisiana Department of Education related to the work of the Recovery School District.

Worked with staff from LDE and the Louisiana Board of Regents to implement the recommendations of the Louisiana the Blue Ribbon Commission on Teacher Quality to redesign the state’s teacher and leader certification requirements and preparation programs and to develop the state’s teacher preparation program accountability system. Prepared reports and provided testimony for State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, LA Legislature, USED, and other entities related to all programs within the division. Developed and managed budgets for all programs within the division.
