Some 15 years ago, we had just brought our son Thomas to his bed. We had this special journey through the room. Pointing to the Disney items in this very specific order, laughing while banging the lamp. If the journey went wrong, we should start all over again. The result was always a relaxt and smiling Thomas. This evening was different. Dineke and I sat outside of Thomas his door. Not laughing, but crying. That afternoon, we had had a hopeless diagnose. His mental abilities were low, autism spectrum was in, and the future was painted very dark. We should consider out of home placement and get used to the fact that his future should be very different then that from many other kids. 10 seconds it took to decide. No. Never. We will continu with this promising progam, as we see amazing results. No out of home placement for Thomas!These 10 seconds gave a whole different outcome in the years that came after. Thomas is now attending university, all his tests are ok and you wont see back what was painted 15 years ago. But, what if we had listened to the diagnose? What if we had focused on what can't be done instead of what can? What about all these children not running these programs? What does the current system cost in terms of happiness and money? What about short and long term costs?Faith, hope and love have brought us and many families a marvellous outcome.
