As a shelter veterinarian, I perform examinations and ongoing care for current shelter animals and intake exams for new animals. Along with standard spays and neuters, including pediatric and pregnant patients, I have been involved with involved procedures such as fracture repair, enucleation, entropion repair, and cystotomy. I enjoy learning about shelter medicine and its importance on population health for the companion animals in our area. While the majority of patients are dogs and cats, rabbits, pocket pets and birds are also included in my care.

As a volunteer at Champaign County Animal Control, I was able to perform feline neuters unassisted and canine spays and neuters with minimal assistance under veterinary supervision. I also participated in high volume feral feline spay and neuter clinics by inducing anesthesia, monitoring patients, prepping for surgery, recovering patients and performing feline neuters unassisted. My time at the shelter has given me a great amount of surgical experience.

I became involved with the Student AVMA as a student delegate during my first year of veterinary school. When my term as delegate came to an end, I knew I wanted to continue my involvement with the organization. I was elected into the position of Editor-elect for The Vet Gazette, SAVMA's national student publication. As I grew into this role I transitioned the publication from a quarterly newsletter to a regularly updated blog. As a participant in the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience I was able to meet veterinary students, faculty and industry leaders from throughout the country and the world. A large focus of the experience is to work on learning skills in self-awareness, self-management, relationship building and communication. In my position as veterinary assistant, I built on my previous skills and picked up new clinical skills and techniques. I prepared patients for anesthetic procedures, monitored surgical and post-surgical patients, performed dental cleanings and prophylaxis and exposed and developed radiographs. I performed laboratory procedures on IDEXX machines LaserCyte,VetStat, VetTest. I grew in my role by providing client education on parasite control, vaccination protocol, nutrition and behavior. An interesting task that I took on was to monitor and report controlled drug usage to the California State DEA.

As a lab assistant, I prepared growth media, sterilized lab instruments and performed quality control tests. I also analyzed water samples for sediment levels and coloform growth. I documented incoming patient samples and recorded test results for tick-borne and sexually transmitted diseases.

This is where I really got my start in the veterinary field. I worked my way up from the kennels to veterinary assistant in a few months. As a vet assistant I learned how to perform dental cleaning and prophylaxis, to monitor anesthetic and post-surgical patients, to expose and develop radiographs, and to prepare patients for surgery. I also performed laboratory procedures and filled prescriptions. Along with this, I occasionally worked as a receptionist.
