CurrentI developed curriculum and teaching materials for the courses listed below. Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" and "The Associated Press Stylebook" were required texts.Writing for Media -- Writing and presenting information in various formats. Final project is a public relations / advertisement / media campaign for a non-profit organization of the students' choosing.Professional Writing -- Geared toward designing / creating a job interview worthy portfolio of wowrk, including a PowerPoint presentation, a flier, and a movie review. Classroom and online. Healthcare Writing -- Goals: improve Students' ability to evaluate information in medical research studies, present their own research in professional formats (written and electronic), and compare healthcare systems in the United States and globally. Classroom and online.Introduction to Communications -- Course content covers the history of American media from colonial times to the internet. Course content also folds in the role of media in a democratic society ( Watergate, FDR's Fireside Chats, the movie industry and the Hollywood Ten / HUAC, and the first "television war" (the Vietnam War). Students are required to bring in Weekly News Briefings, i.e. current news stories that they present to the class for discussion. Students create a final project that focuses on a business / financial / personnel plan to save an ailing newspaper from going out of business. Students learn about Edward R. Murrow, Walter Chronkite, Carl Bernstein, and Bob Woodward. They learn about Marconi and the original players in the studio movie industry (Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford). I designed this course to teach students about founders, major players / events, and regulations that have shaped the modern culture they know.Editing -- Course content based on how to eliminate errors from written work.
