Editor-In-Chief

Valdosta Today

My role as Editor-in-Chief went beyond that since I only had a couple of green newbies as part-time interns. A digital online news site, I wrote original features as well as aggregated news from a diverse selection of sites. Posting 13 stories (minimal) daily made it a round-the-clock job, which I felt challenged by, but determined to master. The work I was putting out covered regional, state, national and international news. I covered city/county meetings, worked with the sheriff and police chief, broke meaningful stories on topics the public needed to know about. My work raised the number of hits and Google returns in the time I was there. Managing the social media components, too, I was able to maximize our reach and provide quality content.

Editor In Chief

Nashville, Ga

As editor of a small weekly newspaper, I have my hands in every aspect of the publication and community. Though I'm the editor, and am responsible for all the content that appears in its pages each week, I am also actively laying out the paper in InDesign, processing legals (it is the legal organ of Berrien County), taking classified, church news, obituaries, school and society news. I would say that I "am" the paper, but as a small town newspaper, you find that you are a collaborator with the community and the city/county government. Because of that, you bear the burden of reporting what needs to be reported for the good of all concerned rather than the few who might attempt to guide the content.Finding the time to do investigative work and special features is a challenge, since it is as important for small communities to do this kind of reporting as it is anywhere else. Investigative journalism is hindered by time and budget, but that doesn't mean it should altogether be ignored. Delayed, perhaps, but abandoned, never.Since new owners (Trib Publications/Cook Publishing, Inc.) purchased the newspaper in May 2016, and the former editor resigned after 30 years of dedicated (and beloved) service, I have experienced the unique and oftentimes profound response from the readership who balk at any change made. Overall, since there have been no subscription cancellations since I took the position, I would say that the changes are being accepted. What I've discovered is how integral a newspaper is to a small community. Berrien County depends on The Berrien Press for the local news - and if I leave something out, I feel the responsibility that goes along with that.Though I spent the majority of my career writing for magazines and other publications/entities, without question, this weekly newspaper editorial position is by far the most challenging.R

Writer/Photographer

Penthouse Magazine

New York, New York, United States

My work appeared in Penthouse Magazine's View from the Top column regularly from 1996 until the time the column was retired. The theme of the column suited my burgeoning appetite for adventure and travel, featuring off-the-beaten-path first-person event coverage, such as adventure competitions (Eco-Challenge, British Columbia, Australia, Argentina; Marathon Des Sables in the Moroccan Sahara; Desert Cup in Jordan; Atacama Crossing in Chile; Subaru PrimalQuest, Telluride, Lake Tahoe), character profiles (profiled motorcycle-building phenom Jesse James, CEO of West Coast Choppers; KART racer Dario Franchitti; K-1 MMA champions, Las Vegas/Tokyo), as well as a host of other far-flung subjects (such as a Street Fighter tournament in Tokyo between USA gamers and their Japanese peers; a pay-per-view stripper tournament in Toronto with Ron Jeremy and UFC's former CEO Bob Meyrowitz; and most recently "BITCOIN BASICS," published in the April 2014 issue.

Investigative journalism, character profiles and book reviews at Razor Magazine kept me busy and gratified. My article on the homeless in NYC was and always will be one of my pet projects, along with another NYC-based piece on fund-raising among the upper-crust.
