Analyzing the multiple uses of water system services (MUS) in the Bang Pakong River Basin, Prachinburi Province, Thailand. The study looks at a part of the Bang Phluang irrigation scheme where an analysis is made towards water usage and to identify possible solutions for future water management. The effects of climate change are having a great impact on local farmers and their way of sustaining their livelihoods. Vulnerability needs to be decreased and adaptive capacity should be increased to withstand future variabilities in the climate.

Valencia Area, Spain

Academic Consultancy commissioned by ivia (Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias) on the Feasibility of Drip Irrigation in Spanish Olive Orchards in the Albaida region. The little and erratic rainfall in the region threatens the viability olive farming dramatically. Drip irrigation is perceived as a possible solution to cope with the threat. However, the financial feasibility shows that investment in olive farming is not feasible if a farmer is unable to earn a higher return than other options on his or her land.

Mzuzu, Malawi

Research on the impact of Rope pumps on household income.The technology of rope and washer pumps is known and in use for over 2000 years, but the appropriation in Africa seems to be limited, even though the potential benefits can be great. Previous research attributes rope pumps with a significant increase in income of up to 50%. The increasing water shortage and erratic supply augment the need for other (new) sources of water supply. This research explores some of the impacts that rope pumps have on household income in Mzuzu, Malawi.With an average income increase of 35% among lower-income households, the rope pump presents a serious benefit for the people in Mzuzu. By decreasing water bills, extending agriculture and vending of pumped water, household income is diversified and allows for more financial leeway. Apart from direct income improvement, the rope pump aids in health improvement through the supply of clean drinking water and elevated schooling levels. However, the thesis also highlights the necessities for long-­‐term success and the importance of perception and maintenance, which is the biggest factor of negative conception. The rope pump is no large community pump, rather a low-­‐cost, self-­‐supply technology, which needs to be recognized next to mainstream community pumps. It can be highly beneficial when used and maintained correctly nonetheless, it is still in the promotion phase in Mzuzu.
