There is a famine of hope for children in northern Uganda. For more than two decades (1986 to 2007), Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) waged civil war against the people of northern Uganda. As a result of the war and HIV/AIDS, 16% of children under the age of 18 in northern Uganda are orphans. Perhaps the most heinous component of the war was the kidnapping of an estimated 66,000 children from their villages, Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps and schools to be used as soldiers, “wives” or slaves by the LRA. The region struggles to overcome the economic, social and emotional impact of the war. Children and teens now suffer the after affects of trauma, malnutrition and absence of education. They lack the basics: food, clothing, housing, medical care, counseling and education. Without an education, they have little chance of improving their circumstances and the cycle of extreme poverty will continue. These orphans need a place to call home, loving caretakers, access to education and future opportunities. Village of Hope addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the children in their care. Many non-government organizations offering aid in northern Uganda have left the area because they focused on immediate need. VOH offers aid with purpose: the short-term effects of nutrition, health and Christian community…the longer-term impacts of permanent housing, education, training, economic opportunities, self-sustainability and growth in Christ. VOH’s goal is not to provide ongoing dependence-producing aid; our long-term strategies are designed to promote personal growth and self-sufficiency, impacting the region and generations to come.
