Lead ArchitectBig Bus Tours Feb 2020 - Jul 2021London, GbLead Architect for Big Bus Tours, the largest operator of open-top sightseeing bus tours globally. Shortly after joining, the Covid-19 shutdown occurred, the business decided to proceed at pace to hugely accelerate the definition and implementation of a brand-new IT architecture, to be in place for when tourism in each city restarted. Project: IT TransformationThis project defined and implemented an entirely new IT stack across the business, and involved the removal of many on-premise applications, bespoke APIs and other systems in favour of a cloud-based SaaS model from a single ticketing provider plus other third-party services, generating savings and additional revenues of £20m+ p.a.• Defined the architectural roadmap to the new services, while maintaining backwards compatibility with global resellers already integrated into the legacy platform. • Provided strategic oversight of the new architectural model and associated microservices and APIs, in order to ensure future changes could be implemented at pace and with minimum risk of business interruption.• Communicated the new strategy and vision at all levels within the business from the C-suite to the 3rd party developers involved with implementing the platform. -

Project: Core Business Platform MigrationThe purpose of the project was to migrate the entire policy and claims admin functionality from the legacy implementation, which had been largely developed in-house, to the Guidewire InsuranceSuite product.> Took the lead to define a reference architecture and implementation patterns for additional SOA services designed to support the core Guidewire products.> Was Lead Architect for all services outside the Guidewire product, with responsibility to design the architecture of the solution throughout the stack from the enterprise level downwards.> Provided technical designs and guidance to the development teams working on individual applications within the overall solution.Project: Pricing APIThe purpose of the project was to migrate the Pricing API, which provides the price for a particular set of insurance risk factors, from a solution based upon IBM DataStage to an AWS-based SaaS implementation.> Designed the solution to be implemented in AWS, with particular emphasis upon providing an easy, standardised mechanism of adding big-data enrichments via ReSTful web services.> Acted as the interface between the third-party software house tasked with implementing the solution, and ITB’s business and technology stakeholders.Project: Website StabilisationThis project was to provide technical guidance and design input around the need to stabilise ITB’s website, customer portal and eCommerce sites.> Analysed the existing behavioural characteristics of the sites, with particular reference to performance under load and subsequent failure modes.> Designed solutions to cure and/or mitigate specific issues across the various platforms.

Project: Next Best ActionThe purpose of the project was to enhance the MyAviva service (through which customers self-manage their policies), in order to present the user with a number of offers which are designed to cross-sell other Aviva products and services.> Designed the solution to integrate internal systems into the Oracle Real-Time Decisions engine, in order to present the customer with the products that internal modelling has shown to have the highest propensity for the customer to buy.Project: Virtual Customer UnderwritingThe purpose of the project was to monitor in real-time the way in which a prospective customer navigated the online quote journey, in order to identify those elements of usage which would indicate an elevated claims or fraud risk.> Analysed the monitoring capability within the existing web journey, and designed the additional real-time instrumentation that would be required in order to meet the project goals.> Designed the system to integrate with the fraud detection elements of the online journey, and to produce a score of the user’s behaviour that was subsequently fed into the pricing algorithm. > Liaised with multiple platform development and architecture teams in order to gain agreement for the proposed design, and to act as internal consultant across the development teams.Project: Big Data EnrichmentsThe purpose of the project was to provide a frictionless quote journey for customers in order to remove questions that were asked as part of the user experience where this information could be back-filled from other providers. > Analysed the capabilities of a variety of big data sources, both in-house and third party.> Designed a system of providing real-time big data feeds to augment customer data in order to support the NFR’s required to serve the main price comparison websites. -

These were RESTful services that formed part of the interface between the website and the SAP back office systems.> Provided architectural oversight across the application estate to ensure compatibility between components, in order to provide services that scale to meet future business objectives.> Acted as an interface between the System Integrator, the business requirement owners, and the development teams that were based both on and off-shore.Project: Large CustomersThe purpose of the project was to provide automatic responses to for Advanced Shipping Notification (ASN) and Purchase Order Response (POR) for eCommerce orders.> Defined the workflow engine responsible for receiving iDOCS from SAP, then cross-referencing the data with the incoming order, and finally mapping the data to the relevant format required for individual customers.Project: Japan AddressesThe purpose of the project was to enhance the eCommerce systems to allow them to correctly handle address formats to ensure that they are displayed correctly at the presentation layer across all RS’s global websites.> Worked with senior developers and architects to reverse engineer the systems to determine the as-is state, and then perform a gap analysis against the requirements. -
