Several years ago, I was asked to take a Presidential appointment as the CIO of the Social Security Administration. This move changed the trajectory of my career as I moved from technical CTO roles to positions transforming organizations. Today I specialize in building people through consulting, mentoring, and organizing. I work to bring a whole program, a product-oriented and human-centered approach that starts with thought leadership, carries through business development, financial analysis, and product definition, and ends with product management, agile software engineering, continuous integration, test-driven development, DevOps, and cloud-native computing.I used to take pride in conceiving smart solutions, and I'd like to think that I can still contribute technically. But now I take pride in finding and promoting the best people exposing them to current best practices, and organizing them for success. What I love best is when I can inspire thought leadership in others.I have been repeatedly chosen to advance technology in an organization:• Strategic Leadership: I started an IT modernization program at the U.S. Social Security Administration, delivering new applications deployed in the cloud, based on agile methods, in less than two years. These efforts were recognized by the President, who included funding for the program in his budget.• Transformational Leadership: At the SSA I built a new product management process that changed the relationship between IT and the Business and delivered a significant new set of capabilities for one-fifth of the expected cost.• Technology Leadership: Over several years I have provided innovative concepts to the data platform space via the Database Fog Blog, receiving over three hundred thousand views.
