Het doel van de functie is het omzetten van de aangeleverde informatie van Projectmanagement naar inkopen en werkorders. Deze worden dusdanig gepland dat de projecten op een volgens de projectenplanning gewenst tijdstip geproduceerd, gemonteerd en getest klaar staan. Aspecten die een grote rol spelen zijn achtereenvolgens: planning; kostprijs; administratie; begeleiding en instructie van productie; voorraadbeheer en kwaliteit.

In de functie van mechanical engineer is het doel verantwoordelijk construeren van producten en detailleren van projecten binnen de gestelde projectbeheersfactoren: kosten; tijd; personeel; kwaliteit.
