INTRODUCTIONLooking to the future and after over 25 years in virology research, primarily, but not exclusively respiratory viruses. Dr Robert Lambkin-Williams has now set up his independent research consultancy; Virology Consult Ltd.After starting his post-doctoral career at University of London and Retroscreen Virology Ltd as its first full-time scientist, he helped spin out the Company from the university and eventually listed it on the London Stock Market as hVivo PLC. Which recently merged with Open Orphan PLC.As well as an active researcher on pre-clinical and clinical trial projects he was a company director including being CEO during the growth of the Company, then moving to become the CSO as the number of employees exceeded 300.He now consults on both pre-clinical and clinical projects on a scientific basis. He has sat on several scientific boards. Having been an active board member as well as an active researcher, he is keen to continue in a business role and is now considering NED positions particularly with university spin-outs, small start-ups, biotechs, NGOs or charities etc. PREVIOUSLYIn 2001 Dr Rob Lambkin-Williams designed and implemented the first Human Viral Challenge Study to be conducted in Europe in the 21st century accommodating the regulatory challenges that this presented, the manufacture of the virus and analysis of the data. He developed and supervised multiple clinical studies for large pharma, start-ups, biotechs, the US and UK governments, the EU and a varied collection of academic groups. His PhD was in influenza at the University of Warwick and was co-sponsored by the National Institute of Biological Standards and Control. His interests also include other respiratory viruses; coronavirus including SARS, rhinovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus and HIV. He designed and supervised the construction of the first purpose-built human virus challenge unit in the world. Dr Lambkin-Williams believes that unless you “tell people what you have done, then doing it is not worthwhile” (adapted from Schrödinger).
