CurrentWhen I tell people my work title is "Director of WOW!" the 1st question is always… "What is that?" To which I explain my job is to take whatever task/project the sales team, HR, Client Services, etc. gives to our eMarketing dept., and do it in such a way that when they see the final presentation they say "Wow!" After which the very next question is typically "How do you do that?" Over the years I have found what makes most people say "WOW!" is not by going bigger & better each and every time. Doing so would not only hit the limiting ceiling of "...the latest/greatest" (AND blow your budget trying to stay out in front), but in the end what is typcially noticed are all the "effects" and not the message or project's initial objective.Instead, the way to "Wow!" is by providing the unexpected. The element of surprise is extremely powerful and almost always simpler than the bells & whistles approach with it's flaming logos intended to dazzle. One only needs to see an anthology of Super Bowl commercials over the last few years to see the difference. Think about those spots which you still remember decades later; my guess is they are the simple, surprising ones which take us by surprise because they resonate with something personal or simple rather than the exploding, electronic three-ring circus ads that dominate the line up year after year pushing the shock value envelope further over the edge. I believe it takes far more creativity to go simpler and surprise an audience, visitor, client, etc. with a whisper than attempting to shout louder than the competition does with an over the top "Ta-Da!" approach. That is my challenge, whether I am putting together an on-line presentation, designing a logo, animating a banner, design a web site/intranet, creating a user interface, etc.I start with the question of what is the most simple, elegant, unexpected solution to my clients need? Answer that question and you will "WOW!" them.
