About Roberto Palumbo

Thank you for stopping by! I am a R&D engineer with significant research background on analysis and design methodologies for aerospace systems, with particular attention to the development of simulation models and simulation environments for mission analysis. Currently I'm working on the application of data-driven models and machine learning techniques (including Reinforcement Learning) for transport research. I'm author and/or co-author of more than 40 scientific publications (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=MfilDFIAAAAJ&hl=en).I'm very proficient in Python, MATLAB/Simulink. I'm also fluent in JavaScript. I'm extremely familiar with popular ML frameworks as Pytorch, scikit-learn, Keras, Stable-Baselines3 and OpenAI Gym. I'm also proficient in spatial analysis using QGIS. I have working knowledge of Java, and C/C++. Git user.My ongoing research is concerned mainly with: Air Traffic Management topics regarding especially the use of AI as digital assistants for controllers, impact assessment in ATM, performance metrics analysis, data analysis, scenario modelling and Agent-Based Simulation. I have also been involved in studies regarding the integration of UAS (RPAS remote-piloted aerial systems) and Urban Air Mobility.I received my Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Naples “Federico II” (Italy) in 2007. My dissertation focused on the development of a simulation model for the prediction of the vertical and horizontal trajectory and thermal behavior of large high-altitude zero-pressure balloons. The model was validated experimentally twice, when used to predict the trajectory of two large zero-pressure balloons for CIRA's missions DTFT1 and DTFT2.My current research interests:- AI for transportation applications- Air Traffic Management Digital Assistants- Air Traffic Management performance analysis and change impact assessment- Air Traffic Data Analysis and Processing- Transport and Complex Systems- Meteorological and Atmospheric Data Processing,- Scientific Balloons,- Lighter-than-Air Systems,- Advanced Air Data Sensor Systems.

Specifically I contributed to the design and implementation of:- a Digital Assistant for arrival scheduling based on genetic optimization and reinforcement learning techniques (doi: 10.3390/info14040216)- a deep-learning based classifier of GNSS signals to infer different visibility conditions of the GNSS receiver (submitted for publication)I recently tutored a bachelor's degree thesis entitled "Deep Q-Learning in Air Traffic Control: An AI-Powered Decision Support System for En-Route Conflict Resolution" for Sapienza Università di Roma. My other past activities include:- Project C4E: Crowd for the Environment. I worked on SESAR ER3 project "EvoATM" that aimed at developing a framework to pave the way to a more efficient change impact assessment in ATM. The project combined the agent based simulation paradigm with evolutionary computing to understand the influence of ATM components. I developed several Python data analysis tools for the validation and verification phase of the methodology and for the evolutionary optimization framework.
