I am an automation engineer with a 34 year record of successfully developing robotic workstations for small parts assembly and test in the data storage, military avionics and medical device industries. I follow an objective value based approach for identifying the right process candidates for automation. I determine value impact based upon warranty return reduction, internal process yield improvement and reduction in operational cost (in that order). I believe that automation excels where it can improve product quality/reliability and process efficiency. Direct labor reduction is insignificant in value in comparison and has never been a goal of mine. It's just sauce for the goose. I believe people are valuable and automation should enhance and maximize that value not replace it.I have designed custom linear stage based XYZθ cartesian coordinate positioners (cylindrical and spherical coordinate as well) as well as implemented OEM SCARA robots. I have integrated these positioning systems with vision, lasers, dispensing valves, spindles, DAQ hardware, sensors, parts feeders, EOAT, test instruments, etc. For precision part alignment, engraving, measuring, dispensing, machining, data acquisition, pick & place, research and development and test applications.
