The Charter institutionalizes core values of policy, checks and balances, accountability, and merit, and seeks to promote an effective, efficient, and responsive government.My involvement included the following:- Appointed by King County Executive to serve as a Member of the Charter Review Commission.- Member, Equity for All Subcommittee.- Twice selected by Commission Co-Chairs to represent the Commission's work by testifying on behalf of Commission to the King County Council (2019 and 2020).- Helped champion and pass two police accountability and public safety reform ballot measures that were approved by King County voters in the November 2020 General Election.- Co-architect of criminal legal justice and equity reform framework in the King County Charter/constitution. The resulting ballot measures that were approved by voters (1) grant subpoena power for civilian Office of Law Enforcement Oversight, (2) provide legal representation to families of the deceased in officer-involved killings during inquest process, and (3) prohibit discrimination in King County employment and contracting based on status as a family caregiver (a first-of-its-kind protection at the municipal charter-level) or status as a military veteran.
