Horticultural Adviser
CurrentAs a Horticultural Adviser in the Science Department at Wisley, I am part of a team that responds to about 100,000 RHS members' gardening enquiries annually. The nucleus of the team consists of 13 horticultural advisers who work on a daily basis with the 20+ scientists and science support staff from the Botany, Curatorial, Plant Pathology and Soil Science Departments at Wisley.The advice team additionally create, edit and update around 700 items of information per year through a wide variety of media including: radio, TV, podcasts, national press, gardening publications and online.I write monthly advice articles for The Garden magazine and have written for the RHS gardening section of the Saturday Telegraph. I have also written a number of commissioned feature articles for The Garden magazine primarily on indoor or tropical plants, as well as a profile on three large-flowered Hoya species, for The Plantsman magazine. I am a member of the team responsible for recording the Garden Media Guild award winning monthly RHS Gardening Podcast, which is currently achieving the highest download figures of any podcast on iTunes, as well as being available to passengers on British Airways flights.I am a member of the Shows Committee and managed the gardening advice offered at all the RHS 'Secret Sunday' garden shows held in Vincent Square, London during 2015. I have been responsible for organising the Gardening Advice offered at the four London shows in Vincent Square, since 2017I regularly give talks and presentations at RHS shows on orchid cultivation and the beneficial effects plants have on health and well being in the home and in the wider urban environment.
