About Rob L. V.

I think of learning like breathing—it must be continuous and lifelong in order to feel alive. I’m passionate about learning in all its forms. People learn better when they have a sense of purpose: Why am I learning this? How will I use it? So I keep the reasons for the learning at the core of my practice.I think learning can be creative and fun too. My students often tell me they are not bored in class and that they learned a lot.Currently, I am working at San Antonio College in the Center for English Language Learning. By teaching the English language, I help local and international students gain the communication skills needed to achieve their academic and professional objectives. This work springs from both my expertise in languages and my desire to help improve the possibilities for members of my community.

I was hired to teach non-credit ESL courses in the Workforce and Economic Development division of Massachusetts' largest community college campus, which serves a highly diverse local and immigrant population. I taught a range of levels here, from beginner to advanced, finally settling on high intermediate. As the program grew, we wanted better pathway integration with the college credit side so students could move more quicky into college English and their credit courses, so I was tasked with designing and teaching two academic prep courses at the high intermediate level: one focused on themes of community and culture, and one on STEM topics. These courses not only covered English language skills but also academic skills like research, critical thinking, citation, writing, presenting, and reflection.During my time here, the program sought accreditation from CEA. I was tasked with serving as the coordinator of that effort, in which I drew from organizational strategic, and communication skills I developed in my business life. Working closely with the associate director, I developed tools and practices for the program and authored the majority of the 120-page self-study report which earned our program a 5-year accreditation. This two-year process of professionalizing our program was one of the most fulfilling recent accomplishments I've had.

At BLI, I taught a high-intermediate (B2) level, integrated skills class for adults of various backgrounds. I use curriculum textbooks and stories from news media to get students reading and talking about current themes and events. We look at the logic and structure of grammar, and reinforce this learning with a lot of speaking practice. Essays and presentations prepare for real life professional speaking and writing. Games, movie clips, sitcoms, and songs reinforce the sound and meaning of the English they hear around them every day.In addition, I also taught occasional courses of English for Professionals, TOEFL preparation, and American English pronunciation, both group and private classes.
