About Roberto Della Pietra

After receiving a call from 2 Michelin starred restaurant L’Ortolan in Shinfield (chef patron: John Burton-Race) in 1999 where he was offered the position of Head Sommelier, Roberto's career has been one of honours and food and wine enjoyment. In his period there, he was finalist of the Trophée Ruinart UK Sommelier of the Year 2000 (Mathew Longuere won it, and Eric Zwiebel came second). In May 2000, followed John Burton-Race as he relocated his restaurant to London with a new name ‘John Burton-Race at the Landmark Hotel’ in Marylebone, re-gaining 2 Michelin Stars at the beginning of 2001. In February 2002, joined the team at 1 Michelin star Roussillon in Pimlico/Belgravia (chef patron: Alexis Gauthier) with the position of Head Sommelier/Wine Buyer where he stayed for 8 years. In 2010, Roberto decided to follow Alexis to open his new restaurant Gauthier Soho as Head Sommelier/Wine Buyer and subsequently Partner with the online retailer Gauthier Wines. There, received 1 Michelin Star at the beginning of 2011. In 2013 Roberto was appointed Head Sommelier and Wine Buyer at Tirage (which he opened in November), a unique concept of a wine list compiled with 90% Champagne and sparkling from over the world, and 10% still wines! The cuisine is French with a little Peruvian influence (the owners are Venezuelan and wanted a South American touch) served in beautifully executed and presented plats meant to be shared (David Moore of Pied a Terre, L’Autre Pied and Pieds Nus is their consultant and Director).In all these years Roberto have also found time to enjoy life travelling, doing sports (also learning to play golf), partying, dancing, drawing, writing, going to theatre...Enthroned by the 'Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne' on the 28th of April 2014. Regular taster for Square Meal-Imbibe Magazine and other publications. Has written articles for wine magazines and websites. Currently writing his first book on wine.
