Profile bio

About Robyn Carruthers

I am currently completing the final stage of my PhD at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have extensive experience teaching at the university level, as well as helping students prepare for university studies. I have taught a course on Life Writing at Queen's, entitled "Based on a True Story: Lives and/in Literature," as well as serving as a teaching assistant for a variety of courses, including introductions to English, introductions to academic writing, contemporary literature, and the study of human rights and literature. My dissertation project, "Foreign Relations: Contemporary Travel Writing and the Poetics of Foreign Space," is an investigation of how literary travel texts shape our ideas of who, where, and what is considered foreign in the world. It builds on my extensive background in postcolonial studies, the field in which I obtained distinction on my doctoral comprehensive exams. I have forthcoming publications by PMLA (“Extimate Pedagogies, Intimate Texts: Teaching Digital South Asian Diasporas”) and the Centre for International Study of Literatures in English (CISLE), (“Translating Horror into Glory: Decolonizing Salvation in Joan Thomas’s Five Wives” ). I have a broad range of research and teaching interests, including global and postcolonial literature, travel writing, writing and rhetoric, introduction to literary analysis, literary theory, life writing, memory and literature, and religion and literature.

Listed skills include Market Research, Online Research, Qualitative Research, Research, and 5 others.

Stories based on actual events fascinate us. So do stories about real people. A book or movie that claims to be based on “real life” invokes immediate solemnity—and often Oscar nominations. Those that can boast of being “true to life” garner the distinction of authenticity, and those that depict truths “stranger than fiction” are likely best sellers. So do stories about real people. A book or movie that claims to be based on “real life” invokes immediate solemnity—and often Oscar nominations. Those that can boast of being “true to life” garner the distinction of authenticity, and those that depict truths “stranger than fiction” are likely best sellers. Life writing is conventionally thought of as that branch of literature that tells such stories, whether these texts detail events in our own lives or those of others. The divide between fact and fiction, however, is never clear-cut, and life writing affords us the opportunity to explore how the literary forms and frames of life reflect and produce the impressions of truth and reality. Life writing is a broad category of works that all, in various ways, textually construct lives and give them meaning. Traditionally thought to include biography, autobiography, memoir, journals, diaries, and letters, the boundaries of life writing continue to be pushed, blurred, and transgressed. This course will investigate these boundaries, and consider other critically emerging forms of life writing, such as literature that challenges the distinction between fiction and non-fiction; stories that trace the “lives” of objects, ideas, places, institutions, and groups; the writing and reading of spiritual lives as a form of worship; and ways in which technology adapts the telling of a life story. Ultimately, this course will ask students to consider what constitutes a life, at the intersection of literature and culture. Show less
