About Robyn Hansen
I am currently a Ph.D. Student in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences at Virginia Tech, as well as a recent Master's graduate in the same program performing research in the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab under Dr. Robin Queen. My master's thesis focused on validating Theia Markerless Motion capture in the upper extremity kinematics of typically developing children. Additionally, correlations were found between Box and Blocks Test scores and upper extremity kinematics, providing insight into how clinicians can observe kinematics during a simple, and easy-to-implement manual dexterity functional test. While I completed my undergraduate degree, I was given the opportunity to work with the Engineering team at Henry Schein in Carlsbad, CA. There was a large focus on Manufacturing Engineering, but I was also able to coordinate R&D projects and improve validation processes. Additionally, I worked as a Design Engineering Intern in Eerbeek, Netherlands at Schut Systems, a company that designs and develops packaging machines for processing various types of boxes. I was able to work directly with the head engineer at this location, designing components for new machines.I was involved in an Engineering Living Learning Community at Virginia Tech, in which my responsibilities consisted of professional, academic, and social events with the addition of community service.I am also a member of Alpha Omega Epsilon, a professional and social engineering sorority. As a member of this sorority, I am able to make connections with engineering companies and improve my professionalism.I am also quick to adapt to new environments, moving locations is not an issue for my ability to work. Relating to this aspect, I was given the opportunity to travel to Spain and work for a company called Diverbo. I was quickly placed in a position as a leader. Even in an unfamiliar location with peers who struggled to speak English, I was able to change how I lead and adapt to the new situation. I enjoy engineering because I want to have the ability to solve large issues in the field and innovate for the future.
