About Robyn Wheeler

After her own mother experienced a brain injury, Robyn Wheeler decided to immerse herself in the world by leaving her job in graphic design and pursue a career in nursing. Following work at Sanford Health and nursing at an independent clinic in Fargo, Wheeler landed her most important role as a private nurse/case manger for a nine year old traumatic brain injury survivor. Robyn found herself working for two years in the capacity of a nurse, tutor, case manager, and rehab counselor. Most significantly, however, she discovered a passion for minimizing the ripple effect that an acquired brain injury can have on families, friends, schools and employers.Early 2011, impressed with their missions of education, prevention, support and advocacy, she relocated to Minneapolis to work for the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance/Minnesota Stroke Association as their Education Specialist. In that role Robyn served as the educational branch of the organization, providing thousands of survivors, caregivers and professionals with interactive and hands on training regarding brain injury.Robyn spent a year in Detroit, Michigan working on advanced neuro-imaging research using a variation on MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, to detect mild to moderate brain injury in individuals such as NFL players and returning veterans. Following her work in Detroit, she returned to the Brain Injury Alliance for 4 additional years in an educational and consulting role. She then served as the Director of Integrated Care and Education (Nursing and Behavioral Health) for Wing House in Rochester Inc, a transitional care facility designed to assist adults after a brain injury and psychiatric or other neurological disorders.Currently Robyn is part of Hennepin County's Forensic Assertive Community Team (FACT) working alongside clients at the intersection of the criminal justice system, mental illness, homelessness and substance use disorders. As part of her personal and professional mission Robyn also offers training and workshops around various aspects of brain injury and the brain/behavior relationship to survivors, caregivers, and most frequently professionals who work in the field. She specialize in working with those in drug and alcohol treatment, those experiencing homelessness, and especially within the department of corrections.
