I know from personal experience that mental health disorders cause incomprehensible suffering to those who endure them and the people who love them. In middle school, our oldest daughter began to exhibit reckless and impulsive behavior. We began to explore the world of mental health services to get help including individual counseling, family therapy, IOPs, PHPs, and residential programs. She received varied, tentative diagnoses over time but unfortunately died by suicide while away at college. As a dedicated mother who had four teenagers, one with mental illness, I see now that I can make a difference in a role as a social worker. While my formal education is as a physical therapist, I’ve dedicated myself to advocating for those in need over the past twenty years as I raised my children. For the past several years I’ve served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, worked as a home care provider, worked as an addiction counselor for Lake County, volunteered at a non-for-profit dedicated to ending sex trafficking, and worked with people of all ages with special needs.Helping people is my passion and my diverse experiences in working with special needs populations in difficult circumstances give me the experience, patience, and motivation to continue that mission as a social worker.While I’m not advocating for others, I love traveling and exploring other cultures. One of my favorite trips was to Guatemala where we did a 5-hour tour of Tikal National Park, an amazing, ancient Mayan archeological complex, which just so happened to be a filming location for an older favorite movie of mine, Star Wars, A New Hope. I enjoy hiking trails that I read about on alltrails.com. I like walking with my dogs at forest preserves, planning game nights for friends and family, and trying to keep all the plants I acquired during covid lockdown alive.
