Exploring marine microbial community dynamics on natural and synthetic polymers"Results chapters:- Understanding microbial community dynamics to improve optimal microbiome selection- The PET Plastisphere: a proteogenomic characterisation of marine PET-degrading isolates and analysis of microbial community succession- Plasticizer degradation by marine bacterial isolates: a proteogenomic and metabolomic characterisationKey skills:- Genomics: DNA and RNA extraction; Library preparation and sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq platform (16S/18S/ITS amplicon sequencing); qPCR; Sanger sequencing.- Bioinformatics: Amplicon sequencing analysis including DADA2, Mothur, QIIME and PICRUSt2; Whole genome annotation and mining; Proteomics analysis; Python and R packages for statistical analyses.- Proteomics: Preparation, sample processing and data analysis using MaxQuant, Perseus, R and Python.- Programming languages: Python (proficient), R (intermediate), Java (familiar) and Matlab (familiar).- Standard microbiological techniques (e.g. culturing, enzymatic activity assays, etc.)

During this internship I was involved with: drafting policy proposals, health and safety reviews, updating the waste services website, audits of service areas, laying the groundwork for the implementation of new in-cab technology for collection drivers and assisting the ‘Recycling Champions’ with engaging the public and improving recycling rates in Coventry.

”Aging of biofilms using an individual-based model to study growth”This project applied the previous work of the group - using chemostat models to study aging in bacteria - to models of bacteria growing in biofilms, and was supervised by Dr. Jan-Ulrich Kreft. This led to a first-author publication (in prep.) and I have presented the work at two conferences.

“Research into sub-micron sized plastic fragments in the marine environment” with Prof. James Readman and Dr. Eniko Kadar

Part time research on the spatial distribution and identification of microplastics leading to a publication. I used a hypersaline floatation technique followed by visual removal of fragments from sediment samples and then identified these fragments using FT-IR and comparison to a reference polymer database.
