About Robyn Booth, Ms, Phd

By training, I am a Socio-cultural anthropologist whose dissertation research examined the nexus of national and ethnic identity with museums, particularly in representations of the past. Additionally I conduct research on gender and sexual identities. I am a firm proponent for Mixed Methods (qualitative and quantitative) in the Social Sciences. Currently interested in further developing the applied application of data collection and analysis for corporate, governmental, and NGOs.I am currently teaching introductory, writing, and world religion courses at the University of Connecticut, Stamford.Methodological Specialties: Ethnographic research, qualitative and quantitative data collection and data analysis, pile sorting (card sorting), interviewing, surveys and questionnaires, participant observation, cognitive modeling, schema mapping, factor analysis, archival, and historical data collection and analysis, discourse analysis.Topic / Area Specialties: Areas of interest include: Human Rights, Museums, National and Ethnic Identities, "Collective Memory", Gender (especially third gender/transgender), Ritual, Historical Anthropology, Mixed Methodologies, Applied Anthropology, Subcultures, Religion, Magic, Witchcraft, Folklore, the Anthropology of Play, and Tabletop Games.Regional Foci:Slovenia, Balkans, Pennsylvania Dutch/Amish, Native North America, South Pacific Islands, North America (USA).Current Professional Responsibilities: Course design and teaching undergraduate students.     Along with designing and teaching dozens of courses on anthropology, I designed and taught courses on "world religions" and "race, ethnicity, and nationalism". I also completed eleven months of fieldwork in a multi-sited filedwork project throughout Western Slovenia. I utilized mixed-methods (both quantitative and qualitative methodologies) to study the effects of museum discourses on visitors' senses of national identity. Further, I demonstrated how larger public discourses surrounding identity within Slovenia, especially in regards to historical memory, emotion and nostalgia are impacted by unresolved societal traumas surrounding World War Two.
