During this process, I consulted on the ideation of the podcasts, conducted research for content, ran recording sessions, edited and mixed each episode, wrote the release articles for each episode, and assisted in the distribution and syndication of the podcasts.

My Masters research focused on the genetic diversity of Arctic marine microbial eukaryotes. During my time as a graduate researcher, I gained experience in the following:- Bioinformatic approaches for genomic and transcriptomic data sets- Phylogeny - Bash, Perl, R scripting- Lab protocols for chlorophyll extraction, DNA/RNA extractions, various microscopy techniques- Fieldwork protocols including water sampling with a rosette, filtering for DNA/RNA extraction, chlrophyll sampling, FISH and DAPI preparation, as well as sampling techniques for ice stations and other on-board projects

This internship included two weeks in a classroom environment followed by six weeks of self-directed bioinformatics research, working on the data-set for my Masters research. The role was fully funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation as part of the Marine Micro-Eukaryote Transcriptome Sequencing Project (http://www.marinemicroeukaryotes.org/).My work during this internship:- refining the assembly of 20 algal transcriptomes- creating more robust genomic assemblies for 5 algal genomes- performing statistical analysis on each transcriptome and genome- conducting a differential gene expression analysis in R on each combination of the transcriptomes- building figures based on these analysis for publication

During my time in Dr. Kaczmarska's lab at Mount Allison University, I led an independent research project on the movement of Tabularia fasciculata male gametes in relation to female gametes. The project resulted in a first author paper published in PLoS ONE (Motile Male Gametes of the Araphid Diatom Tabularia fasciculata Search Randomly for Mates).Responsibilities included:- Preparing media for cultures- Maintaining algal cultures for experiments- Setting up mating experiments- Monitoring the progress of experiements- Using a Zeiss inverted microscope to identify and film male/female gametes during experiments- Data analysis in MatLab and R to assess the movement patterns of male gametes- Creation of images for publication- Writing a draft manuscript for publication

During my second year of university, and for the following two summers, I worked as a research assistant to Dr. Paul Morris in the Department of Biology on a variety of research projects. My work assisted multiple projects that became published research, including one paper in which I was first author, and enabled the department to secure further grant money. I also presented my research at multiple conferences across the country.Responsibilities included:- Building a database to house metagenomic data and annotations - Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data analysis of a Lake Erie mid-winter algal bloom: annotation, functional analysis, proteomic analysis- Assisted in the analysis of Lake Vostok accretion ice metagenome and metatranscriptome- Performed wet lab protocols: PCR, DNA/RNA extractions, sequencing library preparation, gel electrophoresis, gene cloning, media preparation, culturing bacteria
