As a Silver-qualified Optical Assistant, I have been trained to; carry out initial health assessments prior to eye examinations, using a range of specialist machinery and equipment; assist the Optometrist in establishing a patient's relevant medical history, sending referrals to NHS and private hospitals, and showing patients how to best use eye care products; helping customers select optical frames and lenses best suited to their needs (be those functional, fashionable, or occupational) and prescription; accurately measure a variety of different lenses with varying functions, such as varifocals, bifocals, etc. using technical measurement tools; advise patients on how to insert and remove contact lenses safely, as well as hygienic wear and care; inspire proud patient loyalty through a tireless and a consistently high-standard of customer service; many other duties typical of other retail environments and the day-to-day admin that comes with the operation of a successful appointment-based clinic.

Through this 13-month Level-3 Apprenticeship programme in Optical Retail, with a fast-tracked structure, I gained the knowledge, experience, and skills to be trained as a Silver Optical Assistant come the end of my apprenticeship contract, then-projected as March 2020.Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic interrupting the last month of my apprenticeship, my apprenticeship contract was extended until Vision Express thought it appropriate to end furlough for customer-facing staff members, at which point I was given a permanent, part-time contract-of-employment.
