About Roberto Calvo
After 5 years working on the industry and 6 years working on a research group in the University I joined IMDEA Networks institute in 2014 to continue my scientific career through the Ph.D. My main research line is related to IoT and collaborative-smart systems deployed at large scale. More specifically I am interested in "Collaborative Wideband Spectrum Monitoring". One of the main ideas behind that is to create a collaborative and distributed algorithms to build a smart crowd-sourcing platform with a view to democratize the access and knowledge of the radio spectrum. I mainly work with low-cost hardware (RaspberrpiPi/ARM/Arduino and RTL-SDR) and build on top smart software solutions in order to enable useful techniques as signal reconstruction, anomalies detection and networks monitoring. Electrosense (http://electrosense.org) and OpenSky Network (http://opensky-network.org/) are two of the main projects in which I am involved.From 2012 to 2014 I was involved in an exciting project about care elder people. I developed a great passive system to detect automatically danger situations for elder people (falls, prolonged absences, etc). The system works fine in complete darkness and respects the privacy of the people. The 3D People Tracker technology can be used in elderly and surveillance system. I have coordinated and participated in the development of the first FLOSS engine of mobile augmented reality (LibreGeoSocial, ARviewer, GogglesFLOSS). The project involved in this research is Electrosense (http://www.electrosense.org): The Electrosense's goal is to sense the entire spectrum in populated regions of the world and to make the data available in real-time for different kinds of stakeholders which require a deeper knowledge of the actual spectrum usage- Improve ToA (Time-Of-Arrival) estimation in ADS-B and Mode S aircraft messages. The project involved in this research is OpenSky (https://opensky-network.org): The OpenSky Network is a community-based receiver network which continuously collects air traffic surveillance data. Unlike other networks, OpenSky keeps the collected raw data forever and makes it accessible to researchers. With over nine trillion ADS-B and Mode S messages collected from more than 1000 sensors around the world, the OpenSky Network exhibits the largest air traffic surveillance dataset of its kind.
