Position is funded through and supports the National Institutes of Health Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) initiative and reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Research. Primary responsibilities are to coordinate, stimulate, and participate in the development of multi-disciplinary research efforts in the fields of bioinformatics and medical informatics within the university and across the state. Position requires a broad understanding of the fields of Biology, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, and Medical Informatics as well as knowledge of the current bioinformatics research efforts and resources at institutional, national and international levels. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, facilitating and supporting collaboration across departmental and institutional lines, serving as a consultant on medical trial and project steering committees, bioinformatics software design and development, maintenance and improvement of bioinformatics infrastructure, and supervising and training technical personnel.Major Roles Serve as a statewide contact for the Kentucky Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network. Coordinate both institutional and statewide efforts and present initiatives at regional scientific conferences. Assist in the coordination, design, and development of the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center Biospecimens and Bioinformatics Core data warehouse. The initiative is hosted by the Kentucky Cancer Registry, a participant in the NCI’s SEER program and a NAACCR Gold-Certified registry. Additional collaborators include the UK Medical Center, UK Departments of Computer Science and Biology, and the UK School of Library and Information Science.  Coordinate campus Bioinformatics group and organize monthly meetings and presentations. Administer Bioinformatics Internship Program for visiting undergraduate scholars. Supervise departmental IT staff.
