About Mitch Rock
I have been studying (B.S. + Ph.D.) and working in materials science for over 15 years, with a focus on polymer science – specifically rheological and mechanical testing. Rheology is of particular interest to me, because you can see the behavior of the material under a wide variety of conditions. For example, in my current role we can use rheology - along with other techniques - to support customers through the entire adhesive bonding process. We collect materials science data to model flow of individual two-part structural adhesives, mixing, curing, bonding, and finite element analysis (structural + PSAs) of the cured assembly. I have been very fortunate to work on many great teams and projects during my career. Through this, I have learned how important it is to have an engaged and diverse team to innovate and solve problems. Personal circumstances have also taught me how vital it is to support and be an advocate for neurodivergent individuals to create a work environment where everyone can thrive.Interests: Polymer science and mechanics, rheology, viscoelastic theory, polymer thermal analysis (DSC, TGA, TMA, DMA), other polymer characterization (GPC, spectroscopy, etc.), advanced rheology techniques (magnetic, electronic, dielectric, extensional, UV, hyphenated), nanomaterials, composites, conductive polymers/composites, additive manufacturing, structural adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesives, neurodiversity
Listed skills include Problem Solving, Data Analysis, Materials Science, Polymers, and 13 others.

Materials Science Specialist
Senior Product Development Engineer
Apply polymer science and rheology expertise to improve structural adhesive material understanding and enable digital solutions for customers.
Senior Research Engineer
Function as the division subject matter expert on rheology, utilizing polymer science and thermal analysis theory to support R&D, troubleshoot production issues, and develop product release specificationsDesign test plans and methods to characterize a wide range of materials, including: traditional rigid polymers (thermoplastics, thermosets), pressure-sensitive adhesives, complex fluids (colloids, emulsions, suspensions), and low viscosity materials (polymer solutions)Identify opportunities to implement advanced rheology techniques (UV, electro, dielectric, extensional, etc.) to solve problems in innovative ways
Graduate Research Assistant
Supervisor: Dr. Michael KesslerDeveloped processing method to disperse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in water-based surfactant wormlike micellar solutions Investigated rheological properties of CNT-micelle solutions to determine the relationship between shear behavior and orientation Worked closely with machinists to develop a shear-alignment apparatus to create aligned carbon nanotube mats through simultaneous shear and filtrationManaged undergraduate student staff in tasks related to my researchCollaborated with group members and research colleagues to characterize rheological properties of various materials tests using an ARES G2 strain-controlled rheometerExperience in various materials characterization techniques (TGA, DSC, DMA, TGA, FTIR, SEM, NMR, TMA, tensile tests)
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Supervisor: Dr. Rahul PanatI was a teaching assistant for ME 220, a hands-on Materials Laboratory characterization class. I instructed over 40 students from various engineering departments. For each laboratory session I started by teaching fundamental materials characterization concepts and reviewing safety protocols. We then performed the experiments, where I went into more detail on the characterization method and the purpose of each experimental step. Following each laboratory session, I continued communication with students as they wrote their lab reports to answer any questions they had. Finally, I provided detailed feedback to each student on both their understanding of the technical concepts and their written presentation of the results.
Graduate Research Assistant
Continued my undergraduate work creating and characterizing the dielectric and mechanical properties of multifunctional materials for applications as structural capacitors. Received Iowa Space Grant Consortium Fellowship while in this position.
Peer Mentor
Supervisor: Andrea KlockeAssisted in forming connections between incoming Materials Engineering students and the departmentOrganized and participated in various social activities involving new studentsProvided guidance and assistance to students in my mentor group
Research Assistant
Supervisors: Dr. Michael Kessler and Xia ShengWorked with glass fiber reinforced polymer-ceramic matrix composites for applications as multifunctional composites. Characterizing the dielectric, thermal, and mechanical properties of the composites and evaluating them for use as structural capacitors for high temperature and aerospace applications.Characterized the kinetic effects of various catalyst systems on “click” chemistry polymerization using DSC and oscillatory rheology. Lap-shear tests were also performed to evaluate the mechanical adhesion properties.
Research Assistant
Coordinated a research project between the departments of Chemistry and Engineering Mechanics that used a nanoindentation machine to characterize and compare the mechanical properties of Metal-Organic Frameworks.
