About Rob Black

My name is Rob Black and I am a sought-after Aerospace and Defense problem solver, helping customers make informed and confident decisions. I pride myself on being able to translate complex questions into discrete steps to answer questions. Communication is critical to ensure both the customer and engineering teams understand the problem, level of rigor desired, and schedule for results. Too often I have seen organizations answering the wrong questions or not bringing the desired level of rigor. In my current role I coordinate and execute high-profile studies in in space situational awareness (space domain awareness), satellite survivability / resiliency, and technology evaluation. This involves developing modeling and simulation workflows in the areas of orbital mechanics, directed energy weapons, direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles coupled with data science and algorithm design / development. I present complicated technical results to senior management and high-level customer executives to inform program decisions. I enjoy putting together presentations that are appropriate for the level of knowledge and goals of the audience and find it rewarding to hear after the presentation that the information was easy to understand and actionable. An accomplishment I am particularly proud of was developing a fire suppression device for aircraft engine and automotive applications. When I became involved the propellant would not burn. I was able to devise a way to make it burn to completion and the resulting device worked extremely well in aircraft engine fire suppression testing. Working with a senior chemist we developed a new propellant that did burn better and that device performed well in suppressing fires in automotive crash testing.I am always open to opportunities that would utilize my background and bring a needed resource to an organization. • Saic
Aerospace Engineering Manager ► Algorithm Design And Development ◆ Modelling And Simulation
    Saic Oct 2017 - Present
    Reston, Va, Us
Currently executing and coordinating on-going high-profile studies in space situational awareness, satellite survivability / resiliency, and technology evaluation, which involves modeling and simulation, orbital mechanics, data science, and algorithm design and development. Section manager for a staff of 7 scientists and engineers which involves coaching, providing performance feedback and assessments. Some of the projects I work on are rapid-turnaround and highly visible within the customer community with results going to agency directors for major funding decisions. I streamlined and improved a campaign analysis workflow reducing the number of analysts required by more than 50% and received customer recognition for providing clear results. This workflow provides key results used by senior customer leadership to facilitate major funding decisions. For a detailed list of accomplishments, please request my resume.
  • Aerojet Rocketdyne
Aerospace Engineering Manager ► Design Engineering ◆ Project Engineering ◆ Research And Development
    Aerojet Rocketdyne Feb 2000 - Oct 2017
    Los Angeles , California, Us
After gaining experience as a Principal engineer I was promoted to Manager with 7 engineers reporting to me. My primary job was to provide technical leadership on the many products in design and development and actively contribute to projects that were critically important to the organization’s future. The solid propellant rocket motors and other devices I worked on are complicated devices which are not forgiving if something is not designed or assembled properly. Since rocket motors can transition from proper operation to an explosion in a few milliseconds if something is awry, attention to detail in all aspects of the design and manufacturing are critical. An externally funded research and development program that I performed project engineering and internal ballistics design engineering incorporated some advanced technologies that required significant development in a short timeline and minimal budget. The project faced some challenges but I am proud of the data analysis, proposed prototype testing that I was able to provide which led to a successful conclusion and resulted a multi-million dollar DARPA program. For a detailed list of accomplishments, please request my resume.
  • Aerojet Rocketdyne
    Principal Design Engineer
    Aerojet Rocketdyne Aug 1995 - Feb 2000
    Los Angeles , California, Us
    • Key contributor on several tactical rocket motor programs, automotive inflator design, and fire suppression projects. Performed internal ballistics design and analysis for several research, development, and production programs.• Overhauled legacy FORTRAN engineering analysis tools by incorporating modern graphical user interfaces (GUIs) with Visual Basic .NET resulting in added capabilities, significantly quicker turnaround times, visualization of input and outputs, and input error checking.
  • Atk
    Senior Design Engineer
    Atk Feb 1991 - Jul 1995
    Dulles, Virginia, Us
    • Led motor performance design and analyses on several solid rocket motor programs in team environment. Designed motor propellant configurations to meet customer performance requirements. Analysis methods included finite element modeling. • Led motor performance analyses on many preliminary design, proposal and research projects, with emphasis on ease of manufacture and low cost. • Supported projects in prototype development, testing and production phases.• Developed computer models and methods for phenomenon that are not yet well understood. • Streamlined routine analyses using computer programming skills. • Provided department representation on a division level computer committee responsible for identifying and meeting the division's hardware and software needs.• Trained new ballistician in the use of computer programs, equations, and modeling techniques.
