A member of the Institute of Metallurgists, Rod has been involved in the fastener industry for most of his career.His fastener experience covers manufacturing processes of automotive, aerospace, defence and energy bolting including cold, hot, isothermal forging, cryogenic deformation, heat treatment and surface coatings. He moved into bolt and joint design in defence, aerospace and motor sport programmes working on the Tornado aircraft, the Shuttle programme and on Formula One racing engines. Fastener material experience covers medium carbon low alloy steels through to titanium and super alloys. His association with “smarter bolt tightening” started some 30 years ago with high production multi-spindle yield tightening, and then on to RotaBolt which champions bolted joint integrity using the measurement technology of tension control.Rod also chaired the technical committee working on the Energy Institute guidelines (in association with UK Oil and Gas - formerly UKOOA) to assist the aim of securing improvement in the management of offshore installation integrity by development and promotion of industry good practices and suitable performance measures.The guidelines covered all bolted joints used within pressurised systems and are aimed at operators of all plants within all industries concerned with pressurised systems both offshore and onshore.
