It draws on social bookmarking/scrapbooking but is crammed with educationally specific features.3. The contents and the look and feel of each collection can be customised to suit different audiences/individuals. 4. Teachers can share, swap and tweak collections made by colleagues so this is great for collaboration. 5. Embedding in Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) such as Moodle, Blackboard & Canvas is easy. Any editing, updating to the collections within XtLearn will then dynamically update within the VLE. The approach fits neatly into various academic and practical studies on school improvement (e.g. Professor David Hargreaves’ work on joint practice development, collaborative capital etc) and chimes perfectly with Professor Diana Laurillard’s (Institute of Education) exhortations to make teaching practice explicit and to enable teachers to build on and modify the teaching designs and patterns of others. They are getting more than they bargained for. The sheer variety, choice and increased user expectations unleashed in the process looks set to shift the relationship between learners, practitioners and providers. Individuals can now access and link together options from a variety of different sources. This legitimises the idea that education can come in all shapes and sizes. It also accelerates the process whereby choice and control is pushed away from institutions and towards the learner. The potential shift in power that this represents is fundamental and new.These developments raise complex policy issues and force governments and institutions everywhere to reassess their roles and responsibilities in education. There’s a lot at stake.
