Early in his career, Dr Thiele was an industrial chemist in the manufacturing sector. With a view to work in a more people-centric setting, he progressed to being a science teacher at Kalamunda Senior High School and All Saints’ College. He taught students chemistry, physics and junior science.

While at Kalamunda SHS, he developed an interest in educational research and accepted a scholarship to conduct a PhD on teaching and learning in science. By the conclusion of that study, he had become an accomplished and effective communicator, having presented more than 60 talks on teaching and learning in five countries in addition to having written 2 book chapters, 12 refereed research publications and approximately 10 other publications.
